Title: i-Ram
Post by: blobrana on September 08, 2005, 03:47:18 PM
Hum,
There is an interesting article about i-RAM, a memory solution/replacement of slow magnetic based Hard Drives…

It just slots into a PCI slot and you boot directly from that…and very quickly…

I would go for it if it wasn't for the 16 hour limit. I would need at least a weekend's worth of battery back up for it. I already have the SATA controller and I have 2 x 1gb DIMMS that I could transfer over and then upgrade memory or possibly even mobo+memory.
But the thing that is likely to be the deciding factor is the price. I would have to pay about £300 pounds for the card and the other two DIMMS.
The raid0 idea is really cool though. Who would have thought it...RAID0 DIMM/SATA Drives?

As long as you leave your machine plugged into a wall socket, the PCI will keep it alive.

But I have similar problems with the device...
1. Too expensive.
2. Too small (a 4gig drive?).
3. Uses a PCI slot.

4 gig, quite nice to run an OS on. No way to replace a normal hd though, indeed.

Yeah,
That was the main point...

Though, i could imaging that a smaller drive could be used for paging files or application temp files (ie photoshop) or when the system tops out on the Mobo ram..

If it didn´t use PCI then it would be interesting as a very fast disk for portable computers.

My thoughts exactly.

From what i understand it only uses the pci slot for power, i suppose other solutions are possible.
