Title: Monitor for AOne
Post by: Tafka on March 24, 2003, 01:56:59 PM
I'm going to upgrade my monitor for AOne.  While I was thinking of going the LCD route, I'm not sure I can justify the extra expense.

So, does anyone have opinions on reasonably decent 19inch CRT monitors.  I have a Belinea one that I use for the PC but this makes a nasty clunk when changing res.  This is okay for the PC because you don't tend to do that very often.

Obviously for the Amiga, screen/res changes can be quite frequent (especially with the sort of apps I run) so can anyone recommend a *quiet* monitor that changes frequency reasonably quickly.  The Belinea would drive me mad within a week.   :-x

My advice:
Justify it  :-P  :-P

/me got 2 18" TFT sitting in front of him.

No way that I would ever return to CRTs !

I have a belinea 17inch it also makes a clunk when changeing resolution i also have a cheap 15 inch lcd screen, i now prefer using the belinea i know the dearer screens are a lot better but for what they cost there still no way near as good as crt with a sony trinitron tube much clearer.

@amigamad

That just means you got a lousy LCD .....

My Phillips 18" connected via DVI has a display-quality
that just destroys any CRT I ever saw. Even the slowness of LCDs
ain't no prob with that one.

The older noname LCD is not so good, but still way ahead of
any 21" CRT (same size as 18" LCD) in the same priece-range.

To be honest, it's not the size of the screen necessarily its the res.  How high does your 18" LCD go?

Interestingly, I was looking at a cheap Proview (urgghh!) 17" LCD and the picture looked pretty good at 1024x768 even though it was a 1280x1024 screen.  For less than 300 ukp.

Well they are both 1280x1024 and going higher wouldn't even
make any sense unless you got super-mutant eyes  :-o

1280 on 17" should be o.k, but if you plan to stay at 1024
I would advice you to search for a 1024 one as scaling is never
perfect.

Or just set a shlightly bigger font  :-P

Well, I run my 19" CRT at 1600x1200 so I guess that is just what I am used to.

I have just taken delivery of a Samsung SynchMaster 171 TFT monitor, and I am very impressed!

I have it running next to my old sony 17" CRT, and it is vastly superior.
In fact I think I am going to have a riot on my hands when I take it away from the PC

I've used a Samsung SyncMaster 15GLi for over six years, at resolutions from 640x480/256/512 right on up to 1600x1200.
Compared to a Hyundai 15" (running similar screen-sizes), the Samsung's res-switching is suberb!

I even have several CUSTOM sizes edited through Picasso96.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

My advice for those considering 19" and upwards CRTs is to keep an eye on the shops -- It seems that these sizes are to be dropped from product ranges in the near future in favour of LCD models.

I can afford a 19" CRT myself, but 17"-18" LCDs are out of my reach!

Yes Samsung rules !

I have a SyncMaster 17GLs since years
I'm a CRT Freak :-)

@Tafka
We had dozens of dead Proview TFT's here for repair
Logic and PSU Problem...

The 20" Sony trinitron I have at home hasn't let me down yet ;-)

But the flatscreens at the university is very nice. They use them in the labrooms since they don't give of as much heat.
But they are only 15" - sooooo small... :-D

Hmmm, still undecided really.

I've got to admit though, I run Amiga Forever on the PC at 1600x1200 in 32bit and I really like it!!

So I guess, I'm going to go for a CRT anyway.

Thanks for your opinions guys and I'll stay away from Proview!

Yeah - I got a Samsung 19" CRT six moths ago - you need to go the crt route if you play fps games. The Samsung is excellent quality - and cheap at £160 in the U.K.

I bought a rebadged AOC 17" LCD a few months back from dabs.com. Nice and cheap with a (tinny) built-in speaker that is just fine for system pings etc. Runs at 1280 and is hooked up to a PC, my A1 and two Classic Amigas via a switcher box.  Much, much smaller, quieter and better to look at than any CRT monster of a comparable resolution.

At work I use a desktop TFT, and I have a TFT in my laptop. TFT is great in many ways. Spare space on your desktop might be the biggest advantage. The "cool factor" is another :-). I also find TFT's to be somewhat nicer to the eyes than CRT's. However, CRT's might perform better in envireonments where the daylight shines through. And I have discovered that TFT's does not display colors completely accurate. Very light shades of gray might be seen as white for instance. I know there are TFT screens around aimed for the DTP market among others (where true colors are really important), but they are *expensive*. TFT screens also have an issue with frequent screen updates too (like in games), but the newer and more expensive TFT's are better than the older ones on this. And things improves all the time.

I have three CRT's on my desktop now. Two Dell 21" Trinitron and one Hansol 19". I think they are all great. The Dell Trinitrons has two inputs and a switch at the front to choose between the inputs, which suits me just fine.

I will definitely choose TFT's when I upgrade. By that time I'm sure the TFT's will have improved and dropped in price.

Instead of buying a cheapo 15" TFT or 19" CRT I'd put my money on a high-quality 17" CRT.

Check out the pricier versions of Sony and Samsung monitors with Trinitron screens. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I'd never choose a TFT for an Amiga. The ability to run many different resolutions depending on what application you're using isn't really compatible with the fixed-resolution philosphy of Windows and TFT monitors. Sure, the 15" ones look great in 1024x768 but switch to 800x600 (for example in a full-screen picture viewer, a game or whatever) and it looks crap.

19" high-quality CRT-monitors have become very cheap novadays. I went for a 19" Silver/Black Hyundai CRT-monitor 1600 x 1200 85Hz DynaFlat-X! Take a look atthe following address

Any more opinions on ViewSonic?

I had a good flat screen (crt) ViewSonic...
it had really nice color reproduction, but
had problems with tight patterns (moire).
My current CTX (trinitron, but cheap version)
has no problems with moire effect, but does
not seem to reproduce colors as nicely, and
there's a slight uneven brightness in the
screen...perhaps the more expensive trinitrons
are better.

Hmmm.  After trying the iiYama last night I have to say I'm not that impressed.  The picture quality at 1600x1200 is not as good as my Belinea one.  In fact I would go as far as to say that I could not run WB at 1600x1200 as I wouldn't be able to read the text.

I tested both monitors with my Radeon 9100 and the difference is quite noticable.  Dabs may even be getting a returned montior to be honest.
 :-(
