Just been reading about hurricane Katrina. Hope none of our users will be caught in the crossfire...
Anyone on here from Alabama, Louisiana etc?
-
I know Wayne and a few others are from Alabama, I hope all is okay...
-
I hope all is well.
Still, I'm sure these guys know how to deal with hurricane weather, they seem to get enough of it.

Hardly, the last hurricane to hit the Louisiana area was over 35 years ago...

Last big one to hit NO was Betsy in 65, before most of your time, and it was about 1/2 as big as the one over the Big Easy right now. Katrina is one of the largest storms to hit the US, in the league with Andrew and Camille though hopefully we won't see a loss of life like the one which hit Galvaston in 1900, killing over 6000 people. By sometime tonight they will likely close our airport and we are over 200 miles as the crow flies, and we could see as much as a foot of rain and of course our old friends the tornados.

I just heard on CNN that it's been downgraded to a category two, which
I suppose is better news, although
category-f*cked-off-back-out-to-sea-and-blew-itself-out would be
better.

Only downgraded because its inland, it hit NO as a strong 4/low 5, its eye is 100 miles inland and its still a class 2. Weather will be hitting us here in huntsville in the next hour or so.

Somehow I managed to completely overlook the actual location and immediately thought it was "south" as in Florida etc...
Not quite, eh?

75 mph winds right now, driving rain, and the Cicadas have become crazed, its a very weird night out there.

it's considered "south" even if FLorida is more south.
and 80% of New Orleans is under water. just about everybody is homeless. and the death count is possibly in the 1000's.
it's looking like a MAJOR disaster.
understatement of the century.

Indeed. The scale destruction left in the wake of the storm was mind boggling. I mean we see things like this all the time on the news, third world coutries that are regularly hit by floods. A familiar occurence and a familiar location but the two don't seem to belong together.
My thoughts are with the homeless and families of the dead.

Looks like even the authorities hadn't expected destruction and misery on such a massive scale :/.

No, the last hurricane to hit Louisiana was around 2 or 3 years ago. It came in near Lafayette and most people in my city and all the patients from my wife's hospital evacuated. I stayed as my home is at a decent elivation. I think most of the damage was done around East Lafayette and some areas were without power for weeks.
Anyway, my house is around 2 hour drive from New Orleans and wasn't harmed, but my wife is working overtime to deal with all of the patients that have been evacuated to her hospital. All of our hotels are full and our sports stadium is also being used to house the homeless.
It's a real mess apparently. I'm away on a business trip at the moment so I've yet to see it with my own eyes.
