Title: eBay 2.5 to 3.5 IDE
Post by: lurkist on August 22, 2005, 08:14:07 PM
Does anyone know if the generic 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adaptors on eBay are wired right for Amiga?  I mean the ones with power cables sticking out.  Are these power cables also usable?

Cheers

Oh dear,

following that link gets me

 Dalco.com has the following requirements:

 Browser: Internet Explorer or FireFox
 Screen Resolution: 800x600 (or better)
 Cookies: Must be Enabled
 JavaScript: Must be Enabled

Please ensure you have the required settings and visit Dalco.com again and often!

Besides, that wasn't the question.  Thanks for replying though!

Are you talking about sticking a 2.5" HD on a 3.5" controller, or vice versa? The generic PC-stuff on eBay is most likely for using a 2.5" drive on a 'normal' 3.5" controller, and yes, this works on your amiga too.

BTW check your browser for some setting called 'spoofing' or something like that. This basically makes the browser 'lie' and claim to be IE/Mozilla/Whatever you want it to be

It depends which way you want to go but if you wish to add a 3.5" device to the A600/A1200 2.5" IDE interface then this cable will work:  http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=209

Ignore the photo - you can specify any length upto 25cm at no extra charge depending on what circumstance you wish to use it in (just state length in order comments)

Or just buy one of those adaptors you have seen, connect it to your IDE controller, and plug in a standard IDE cable.

Just remember NOT to connect anything to the power connector. The power connector is only needed when you go the other way around, connecting a 2.5" harddrive to a 3.5" IDE cable. The power connector is only needed to power up a 2.5" harddrive, nothing else.

As the IDE interface of the 1200/600 is not buffered, I suggest you to buy a buffered interface such as 4xEIDE'99 Buffered Interface (see in the AmigaKit shop). The risk to get corrupted data, lower transfert rate,... are null or nearly inexistant.

I prefer the old Winner/DCE IDE interface which can be easyly placed where you like, and also have the 1st 3"5 port dupliqued with a 2"5 that allow you to keep your old 2"5 or transfert easyly its datas to the 2nd 3"5 port.

Oh and don`t forget that depending on which way you are adapting to re-crimp the header onto the cable the correct side or you will have a burnt cable.

I'm talking about putting a 3.5" device on the 2.5" connector on a 4 way interface.  When I said adaptor, I should have said cable.  I know you have them Mr. Leaman, but £7 before postage?  These are about £4 total, sorry but it's a competetive world!  (I'll probably end up buying yours anyway just to be sure it works).

Thanks for the responses,
