Title: New and Confused
Post by: Kheldar27 on August 22, 2005, 07:15:33 PM
I was looking for a long lost game one day and finally found it. The only problem was, it was in a file format i've never heard, thus is my first intro into the world of amiga. I have played this game on an old PC (cannot find it on ebay either) and had to settle for the amiga. Its really quite neat and I like it. Only one problem. It is sooo slow. Im using the newest WinUAE application. Is there settings I am not yet familar with? Any help would be appreciated. I have tried different emulators and so far this has been the best. Please help. I want to learn more, but user guides and manuals and stuff are still a bit hard for a complete newbie.

Perhaps you can tell us a bit more about your setup and what you're trying to run? I don't use UAE myself, but I'm sure it will help those who might have some answers.

My laptop has a 2ghz Intel Celeron w/256mgs RAM running Windows XP(SP2). I am using WinUAE v1.0.0 I tried using the 9.9 version and it works about the same, so i stuck with this one. Im trying to run a Sierra Game(i think they are the best gameing company) Hoyles Book of Games 3. I have the .adf files handy so if anyone wants to try them and see if they run slow for them as well. It could just be me. I tried altering the priorities and different kick starts, but only one really seems to work, but its darn slow and a bit unstable.

I've run emulators for different platforms (c64, nes, and so on) but this seems to be the most difficult. Its prolly just me though.

I say the same as argo, tell us your machine settings and what machine you try to emulate.

Download a configuration file to match the requirements of the game you are trying to play.

Amiga 500 OCS Config (http://amigos.amiga.hu/ancientoys/utils/config_ocs.uae)

Amiga 1200 AGA Config (http://amigos.amiga.hu/ancientoys/utils/config_aga.uae)

Cheers

Sam.

That's not entirely legal, you know... ;-)

@Kheldar27

You might want to try Amiga Forever (http://www.amigaforever.com).  It's a one-stop emulation solution that includes kickstart images (the Amiga's ROM routines), fully configured emulators and an AmigaOS environment if you want to have a bit more of a look at the platform.  It's pretty cheap, and if it doesn't work (highly unlikely) then you'd be able to get a refund.

I will make you the same suggestion.
And if you could buy a real Amiga 1200, it would be so much better  :-)
It's up to you, "we only live once !"

Hmm, I'm not familar with that game. It is good to know when the game came out so it can be match to the most compatable Amiga OS version and Kickstart. Say if it was one of the earliest game out, it might have originally run on an A500. Which would meam you would need Amiga OS and Kickstart 1.2 or 1.3.
I found Hoyles Hook of Games 1 listed on the Lemon Amiga site (http://www.lemonamiga.com) as for the A500. So, I'm assuming the same may be true for #3. Therefore, A500 setting should work the best using Kickstart 1.3 and Amiga OS 1.3 (if needed).
For speed, you could try turning off sound and/or setting it to display every other frame or so.

You may want to keep an eye on Lemonade (http://www.lemonamiga.com/lemonade/preview/), a GUI frontend by Lemon Amiga that will configure WinUAE for specific games.
