Title: Amiga HD in WinUAE PC?
Post by: ckillerh3 on August 10, 2005, 03:19:06 AM
Hi -

I'm putting together an Amiga Forever / WinUAE
machine.  From my previous post you can learn
about how I set-up my CatWeasl IV card.

I read that I can pull a drive from a vintage
Amiga (I've got an A4K) and stuff it into the PC
running Amiga Forever / WinUAE.  Are there tips
and suggestions on the particulars of doing this
somewhere?

I tried doing this but Windoze XP would not recognize
the IDE drive.  When I insisted that it see the drive it
make a change that wiped the drive of info. Also WinUAE
would not see it.  Also I put a ZIP drive with a FFS
formated ZIP disk on the system as well but WinUAE would
not see that either.  I must be missing something !

I'm trying to re-build the drive information using
DiskSalve III . . it looks like its all there but
its OK if its not (all backedup to a ZIP drive anyway).

Any thoughts or real world experiences are appreciated.

This should help:

Support for Amiga SCSI and Block-Type Devices on Windows (http://www.amigaforever.com/kb/5-113.html)

I don't think that WinXP needs to see HDD at all. I've connected Amiga formatted IDE HDD to WinXP and WinUAE automatically find the drive. There was no need for any configuration..

WinXP *must not* see the drive !! As soon as WinXP sees the drive, it is unusable for both the Amiga and WinUAE.

Only WinUAE can see the drive. If you connect an Amiga drive to the PC, run WinUAE and select "Add harddrive". Only the Amiga drive should appear in the list.

If the Amiga drive does not appear on the list, it was formerly formatted for DOS/Windows. There is a command line option for WinUAE which disables the filtering. The option is -disablehardrivesafetycheck. You should be *very* careful with this option. With this option, *all* drives are shown in the list. If you accidentally select you Windows drive, all your data is lost and you can install the entire PC from scatch !!

Bye,
Thomas

actually winXP sees the drive, but not in my computer window. If you go to computer management/disk management you should see your amiga drive as an uninitialised drive.

Thank you, everybody !

I blew away my Amiga 4000 (spare) drive all ready by trying to get WinXP to recognze it from the management utility referenced above.  Mistake !  However, I will re-image the drive from my other A4000 drive (always back-up) and try again with your tips.

Again, many thanks ! I'll post how it works out later.
