Hi All,
I am looking for any one of the following devices to get myself at some real RAM for my A3000. I have an a3640 in it. So, I can use the expansion board designed for this, if you have one.
- X-calibur (A3640 RAM expander)
- DKB 3128 (Zorro III RAM expander)
- ProRam (Zorro III RAM expander
- FastLane (Zorro III SCSI Controller with RAM expansions)
I was originally intereted in Amifast or Simmfonie. But, I don't think that 16MB of ram will be enough. But, if you have either of these, or SIMMS, and you are willing to let them go for short money, I may be interested as a temporary solution.
Thanks!

Just a friendly advice.
The solutions that you seek are all quite rare, and are basically collectors items nowadays. They all cost more, or in the range of any accelerator card with ram slots on it. Performance wise, an accelerator with on-board ram also puts any of the above mentioned expansions to bed, any time of day.
Just to give you a hint of what you will be paying is the current going price for DKB 3128. It goes for about $300USD on eBay.

Sadly, I haven't even seen one on Ebay lately. You can't even find one in the "completed auctions" searches.
I know they are rare... and I am considering just getting a CPU board. But, I already have the a3640. So, to do so would mean I would need to unload the 3640. Know anyone who would want one?
:)

One other word of caution, the XCaliber will not fit in a desktop A3000 without totally hacking up the drive tray.
-
OOO... That's a good piece of advice that I was not aware of. Thanks for the heads-up. I am sure I will never find one anyhow.

I, ermm.. found a place that is selling ZIP chip pulls for 50c each. I just placed an order for 30 of them - if it all works out (ie, they're worth anything, work, etc), I'll post a little heads up where I picked em up from. Of course *after* I raid them of what I need :) Why 30? 24 to fill my RAM banks, and 6 extras incase I hose something up.
-
Sweet! Please let me know.
-
Very sweet! I would also be (very) interested!!
-
I shot JiffyDos the address so he can be a guinea pig too. I guess we'll both get back to you :)
-
@icbrkr
Any idea as to the type of ZIP chips they are selling? Are they 4x256 or 4x1M?
-
Me, too (interested ;-)) - esp. 4x1M static column.
-
I asked specifically for 1x4's and was asked if I wanted FPM's or EDOs. I ordered a bunch of FPMs running at 80ns since that appears to be the correct specs. Fingers crossed that they work :)
-
A bunch as in 200+ ? :-D
-
I dropped him a line asking about what is left. Let's see what he says and we'll both get back to the rest of you soon!

:-o Never heard of EDO ZIPs - I thought they only exist on PS/2 SIMMs and as (very rare) SOJs...

Well... hate to be the bearer of bad news and such.
I got the ZIP chips in the mail today. They are as described, ZIP chips that look like they should fit in my A3000. And they do. But that's about as far as it goes.
First off, let me just say the person who thought adding ZIP chips to a motherboard should be shot. I broke a few off the bat.
Once I got the hang of it, I filled Bank 1 up. The 3000 said "Can't get RAM" or something odd. So I double checked chips, replaced some, etc. It booted yellow. Tried again. This time it booted to a Guru screen (8003 ????). After a few hours of this, I threw in the towel and figured I'd try something else. $15 down the drain, but really it's not a big deal.
-
icbrkr, sad to hear it doesn't work out - what exact kind of ZIPs are they? 4x1M are usually ..4400 (fp) or ..4402 (sc) at the end.
-
@icbrkr:
I could try them on a Octagon SCSI controller and a MegaMix II RAM card? They both use ZIP chips...
-
Any markings on the chips at all???
-
I never heard back... and it looks like they are worthless anyhow.
There is currently a set on Ebay, however.
-
There's a couple different manufacturers here, I tried to keep the bank as all 1 maker:
KM44C1000Z-8
HM511000AZP-8
MCM54000AZ80
Looks like I'll need to slap in some sort of different memory card or get an accelerator with standard slots :)

Definitely 1x1M - no use in a 3k, runs only 4x256K or 4x1M
MCM54000AZ80
Dunno that one, might be 1x1M also or maybe 1x4M - do you have a full bank of these?
-
Well.. that would explain alot, eh? I specifically asked for 1x4s. Oh well, live and learn.
-
Got to correct myself: KM44C1000Z-8 is 4x1M - they should work!!
4x1M per manufacturer:
MCM514400 Motorola
UPD424400 NEC
MSM514400 OKI
KM44C1000 Samsung
TI44400 TI
TC514400 Toshiba
MB814100 Fujitsu
GM71C4100 Goldstar
HM514100 Hitachi
HY514100 Hyundai
MT4C1004 Micron
M5M44100 Mitsubishi
not all available as ZIPs, of course - never knew there where that many different names...
Now, where did you get those at? ;-)
-
where did you find surplus zip dram (pulls) for A3000 ?
:-)
-
Mmm ZIP ram, linky please :)
(Dont care to much about it being 1x1 or 4x1, fun will follow regardless)
I wonder what prices the component sourcing sites would give for pulls, I will have to look at that some time
