Title: PMac 8500 is a doorstop!
Post by: Tripitaka on August 07, 2005, 02:20:16 PM
As I stare at my Power Mac 8500 Nitro DOORSTOP I decided to see if I could get it working. I booted it up and....NOTHING. I reset the system mainboard and NOTHING, I tried to boot from the cd-rom with a OS 8.5 CD and you guessed it ....NOTHING. Anyone out there know a bit more about macs than me, I've used them but never had to fix one. Any help would be most wellcome. :bigcry:

Try the Pram battery. I'm pretty sure the older Macs won't boot up if it's dead.  Take it out and measure it or replace it.  Then hit the MB reset button and try again.

Also, there may be a key or combination you have to hold to boot from CD, like "C" or ?

Hunt around on Apple's site, there should be a powermac 8500 technical manual hidden away somewhere...

Did you also reset the Cuda chip (it's been a while so I may be wrong...)?

It has a small reset switch under the Processor card.  You might be able to press it with the eraser end of a pencil without removing the daughtercard...

And check the lithium battery that backs up the PRAM.

You might want to try resetting the PRAM. Hold Command(apple)-Option-P-R down at boot.
And yes, hold C to boot from CD

I'll have to get a new battery and try out the above. I did reset cuda and MB but considering how long this things been sitting around I reckon the battery would be dead by now. thanks so far folks, I'll post my results. :-D
