Title: The Another World sequel... yes it exists!
Post by: Varthall on March 17, 2003, 07:32:47 PM
Yesterday I've finished (with great pleasure) Out of this World on an old Macintosh. You already know, it's the extended version of Another World, with some new rooms added. I always wanted to see its sequel, Another Earth, which is mentioned in the ending sequence. I thought it was never produced, but today I've found it, with much surprise.

It's called "Heart of the Alien" and it was released only on the Sega CD, the cd add-on for Megadrive/Genesis. The story picks up immediately after the end of the first game, with Lester and the alien flying on ther pterodactyl. I've found a link with some interesting screenshots. I wonder if there's any Megadrive emulator for PPC Amigas that supports Sega CD's games. :-?

Anyway, I'm really happy I've found this dreamt sequel :-)

I thought that flashback was some sort of sequel to Another World.
If you havn't played it, go have a look.

Flashback is based on same type of gameplay, but has a completely different storyline. Whether that counts as being a sequel is up for debate, I guess. The same cannot be said about Heart of the Alien, since that picks up where Another World left off, in the same story...

I thought "Out of this World" was just the US name?

Anyhow Out of this world and Flashback were both excelent games when they came out and they hold up pretty good even today.

Well, OK it's the same company, and almost the same team, but at that time Eric Chahi, the man behind Another World (and the previous point&click whose name I forgot) Left. He did not work on FlashBack.

Witch happens to be, yes, a great game.

He re-appeared on "Heart of Darkness" (PS & poor PC port), that every 2D adventure lover should check out.

So, what about "Heart of the Alien: Out of this World parts I and II" ?? I *want* to see it ! Does "sega CD" mean Dreamcast ? I sure hope so

His first game was Future Wars, another classic. If I remember correctly, Flashback was born first as a Megadrive game, then it was converted to the Amiga.

If you carefully read my first post you'll find out what's a Sega CD ;-)

No actually it most certainly was named "Out of This World" in the USA. My friend's computer store sold the retail game when it came out and I played it. I remember reading back then the Euro version was named different.

Seems there was a TV show called Another World running in the US at the time or something...

Hmm, it could mean that there are two different versions of the game for Amiga.
Do you remember if it has those levels missing in the european version? For example, in the second level, when going down with the lift until the last floor, is there an alien guarding a switch? I'm just curious :-)

...I found out that the next movie (not the one in production) is being based on a video game? But i dont think its The Thing 2, a game called "Another World"?. The script was sent to JCs agent at William Morris Agency in Beverly Hills, and given the green light. I dont have any more info on it. I have not heard of this game....

I wonder what rock he's been living under.

rofl , guys guys....

the sATURN is one of the best 2d consoles EVER made, its damn good at that, but it came too late to make an impression due to the 3d breed that was happening, the psx is better on 3d compared...but the 2d chips in saturn is ALOT better than the ones in the psx.

the 32x however was a let down and confusing for the general masses, as the saturn cant run 32x games etc... and beyond that...it was just a megadrive with a cdrom basically...nothing more...

anyway.. Another world vs out of this world , its a common story , the pirates spread the game so much that they had to rename it and change the game abit to "HoPEFULLY" sell more copies,
but the new region version flopped and sold badly (out of this world) compared to what it could have done.

Another world II on sega is the official sequel.

then came Flashback which was supposedly to be another plot indeed , after that FADE to black came which was based upon flashback, but as we all know FADE TO BLACK really suck..

then later heart of darkness came (ocean) , this doesnt look back at the earlier hits BUT! it offers the same style of gameplay and in many ways its much better than any of the old games but it also have negative sides which you would notice vERY fast ;(

now the team works on a 3d game in the same style (hopefully not as bad as FADE TO BLACK) and its to be released on pS2 and GC this year.
Check their website for more info.

btw the mac version of Another world is bad compared to the amiga version, but flashback on the mac is better...

cheers

Hey Varthall!

I once read about an unpublished sequel to Flashback (i.e. Flashback 2), but didn't know there was actually a sequel to the much, much better Another World. Thanks a lot for the info!  :-D

Go play OnEscapee. it is along the same lines - absolutely excellent ! tough game though - havent got past the funny underground weed that chokes you - just after the drop down into the sewer.

Can Another World be downloaded legally these days ?

Another one was the ancient Prince of Persia which also appeared, among others, on the Speccy and Sam Coupe (ZX derived). the Sam version actually had more frames in the Prince sprite than the Amiga version !! :-o

The most important aspect in the game is the atmosphere it creates. The movie will look very different from the cartoon looking game, but I hope the feeling of an alien and fascinating world will remain. At least the predominance of blue colors in the backdrops :-)

Wasn't the Sega/MegaCD a Megadrive+Cdrom? The 32x had a 32bit cpu and better graphics, it was a more powerful upgrade than the SegaCD.

Hmm, so this was the true reason for the new name...

I've never played, and I remember that at the time it had many positive reviews. Maybe you are referring to the low resolution of the gfx?

btw the mac version of Another world is bad compared to the amiga version,

It's a bit slower on a Mac LC with a 68020/16 and a 320x200 window, but it multitasks! Sadly it doesn't work under Shapeshifter with System 7.5, only the playable demo does.

Unpublished? Are you referring to the extended version of Flashback for PCs on a Cdrom, released one or two years later?

Go play OnEscapee. it is along the same lines - absolutely excellent !

I've tried its huge demo but I've found the controls to be not very responsive - otherwise, an excellent game.

I think not, at least at Back 2 Roots.

I've seen a russian conversion for the Spectrum (made in 1995), but it wasn't very fast.
I've also seen a screenshot from an old c64 demo, it looked like they have redone the intro of A.W. on the 64.

If anyone likes SEGA and any of its consoles you might want to read here: http://www.atani-software.net/segabase/ .  This site holds an indepth history of SEGA's consoles from it's beginnings in the ARCADE industry right through the demise of the Dreamcast.

As for the "Heart of the Alien".  I have the US SegaCD version of the game (it also includes "Out of the World/Another World").   You control the Alien in this game, and I have to admit I haven't gotten around to playing it much. :(

Someone mentionned about playing it on the Dreamcast, well you might be able to if you go here:
http://www.dcemulation.com/ .  They do list two Genesis emulators, but I don't know if they cover SegaCD/MegaCD functionality.

There's possibly an AmigaEmulator out (I've quickly looked through GOOGLE and saw that there's at least one PC emulator for SEGACD.)

With this said, if someone is interested in seeing more of this game I can try and get a few screen captures and/or capture some video.  Let me know which format though.

Another World has allway been my favorit Adventure games seens I first played it on Amiga when it came.

There are another version of the game to the 3DO-consol that has better grafik then Amiga and the other system.

I dident know Heart of the Alien was the following of the Another World.

Next game I am going to buy is  Heart of the Alien.
