Title: connect a modern mouse to a Miggy (and mantra approach)
Post by: xaccrocheur on March 16, 2003, 12:11:24 PM
# I understand that those cool optic mice with the red glow underneath need power from the mouse port, is the Amiga capable of providing it ?

# Is there a page somewher describing how to build a USB<=>DB9 connector ?

Back in pre-USB days, mice wer sold with a PS2<=>DB9 adapter.

# Why is that when I
*) plug a recent USB Logitech Optical mouse in the USB<=>PS2 supplied w/ it, then
*) plug the ensemble in the aforementioned PS2<=>DB9, *then*
*) plug it all on the A4K, and then, resting on my knees,
*) say 3 times
jay, jay, jay Agnus DEI OHMMMM

It does not work ??

# There is a false question is this list, will you clever reader spot it ?

 :-o  :-P  :-P  :-?  :ak47:  :hammer:

(1) Yes, the Amiga mouse port supplies +5V for joysticks, etc. Maybe an adapto will connect to it, maybe not.

(2) Never seen one, but there might be something out there.

(3) The PS2/DB9 adaptor to which you refer may be a serial adaptor, meant to plug into a PC serial port with applicable software. It would need special software on the Amiga side. There might be something on Aminet.

(4) You forgot to turn on the power.

USB devices deliver data in bursts or packets. Amiga mice deliver data as contact interruptions. I don't know what is inside those adaptors, but they had better be pretty clever.

With all the money you spend on adaptors, would it not be cheaper to buy a USB card for your Amiga? Like the Highway, Subway, Norway or Thylacine? At least then you would get full support.

I`m using a USB mouse and I don`t have any USB ports. Ring Eyetech. They sell the Punchinello Mk3. This is for the standard PC mouse. They provided me with a USB mouse which came with an adaptor. Problem solved. Best get a Logitech mouse though as they`re the best supported. This is by far the best mouse I ever used, let alone owned. Brilliant!

If you live in the US try the www.mrhardwarecomputers.com
I own several mouse adapters including
but not limited to punchinello,mr ooh chek.topolino1&2,Mr Meiza

The Mr Hardware one is the best (I dont know what he calls it ) supports 5 button dual scroll mice and the scroll buttons actually work has a autoswitching Joystick Passthrough.
I tested it with Logitech, Genuis, Aopen, Microsoft, BenQ rodents, and it worked with every mouse I threw at it including several USB mice. Does not need software to work as a native three button Amiga mouse. Only problem is Russ (Mr hardware ) is slightly dense and sometimes is slow to deliver. Call once for the order and then again two day's later in case he lost your order.

Kurt

Ohh I use it with a KVM attached to a Wireless logitech 4 button optical scroll mouse and I have never had a problem with it.

Because the Amiga's mouse/joystick socket is NOT a DB9 serial port (despite having a DB9 socket).

You need a specialised adapter that provides extra logic to use a PC serial/PS2 mouse on the Amiga's native mouse socket.

Right now I am using a Logitech USB mouse on my Amiga (USB->PS2 adapter) using the Mr. Myzsa PS2 mouse adapter.  Works nicely, including scroll wheel.

Other options are available, but you might find $40 USD might be too steep for a simple mouse adapter.  If you're not too concerned about compatibility with older hardware banging games, I would suggest spending a bit more money for a Highway(Zorro2)/Subway(clockport) USB adapter which also allows the connection of a wide variety of USB devices including mice, keyboards, printers, scanners, flash card readers, webcams, and more.  The cost is about double the cost of a PS2 mouse adapter, but the extra benefits are money better spent.

There is a driver for serial mice on the Internet, so in theory you should be able to use the following setup:
One USB->PS/2 adapter, connected to a PS/2->Serial mouse adapter, connected to a DB9->DB25 serial port adapter.

I have no idea if this would work in reality, as the amiga's serial port isn't exactly complying to the standards...

It does work, i have used it with a trackball that didn´t work with my punchinello mouseadapter.
Obviously it doesn´t work with the early startupscreen or hardwarebanging games, but other than that it´s great.

Mm.

I'm really wondering how are those sort of gizmos wired :

http://www.mrhardwarecomputers.com/pages/mousekey.htm

See, it acts as a Joystick / Mouse auto switch, witch is very cool too.

I want to BUILD the thing ! 35$ for an adapter is VERY steep, although this one is sexy and looks very cleverly crafted... I'm hesitating a lot... Shipping from US takes ages...

I have had one of them cool optical mice for bout a year now.  And yes the red glow is fing cool as.  Did u know they have more processing power than an orginal 086. anyway mines a ps2 version, cost me a fiver, I would have thought this would work with a normal amiga to ps2 adapter.

Does anyone know if they do blue ones?

If you have Mediator I suggest to get Spider USB card. It has five High Speed USB ports (USB 2.0). It is the fastest USB controller for Amiga.

Info from buy.elbox.com website:

The Spider USB 2.0 PCI card provides a simple and affordable way to add five Hi-Speed USB ports to Mediator-equipped Amigas.

The Spider USB 2.0 Hi-Speed PCI controller is backward-compatible, which means it works also with older USB 1.1 peripherals.

Features:
• Four external and one internal USB 2.0 Hi-Speed ports
• One EHCI (Enhanced Host Controller Interface) controller
• Two independent OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) controllers
• Compliant with EHCI, OHCI and PCI 2.2 standards
• Compatible with both USB 2.0 (480Mbps) and USB 1.1 (12Mbps) devices
• All ports can handle high-speed, full-speed and low-speed transaction
• Supports up to 127 downstream USB devices
• Supplies 500mA power to each USB port
• Supports PCI-Bus Power Management Interface
• Hot Plug Capability

Requirements:
• One free PCI slot
• Mediator Multimedia CD

The package contents:
• Spider USB 2.0 Hi-Speed PCI card
• CD with the Mediator EHCI (USB 2.0) and OHCI (USB1.1) drivers for the Poseidon stack

Sermouse and a real amigamouse works at the same time so if you have a serialport leftover....

I have one. They were the first ones, With the Logitech Logo in a strange (bit tacky) soft transparent plastic circle, lightly protuding (intersesting, huh ? :-D ) only difference apart from the colour, bright dark blue. I'm using it right now. Did'nt know it was a collector  8-) I will sell it out for... Say 930€, it's the price for a basic Pegasos :-P

Well, on a more serious note, I just ordered a MRH Mouse adapter from Mr hardware (http://www.mrhardwarecomputers.com/pages/mousekey.htm) and will learn from there.
