Haven't had a fag for 38 hours. I am going cold turkey, no nicotine replacement type stuff is being used.
I was alright yesterday, but the cravings are starting to get to me now!!!!!! :-(:-(:-(:-(:-(:-(

I thought you were married :-?
:-P

I've been trying to give up again too - the two times I er, 'successfully' gave up in the past, I went cold turkey too.
Good luck, and stay away from the pub if you want to succeed. If you can last a Friday night without a cig, then you have succeeded.
[I'm guessing your mates are like mine, and ALL smoke?]

When my friend gave up smoking he started drinking Earl Grey tea, that seemed to work for him.

Yes, ALL of them bar about 2 that I hardly see anyway. :-(
Ditto with the cold turkey, it's the only way i've given up in the past too. I just need to stay stopped this time.
I'm so close to popping out to buy 20 fags though! MUST RESIST!!!!

My uncle was told to give up by his doctor when he was in his fifties. He started eating mints. From then until the day he died (in his late 80s), he always seemed to have a packet of Polos ('lifesavers' for the yanks).
"Fancy a Polo-mint, Adam" he would ALWAYS say...
[that last bit wasnae strictly necessary]
OT:
When you're a kid, you tend to associate things (and smells, sights etc) very strongly with people. I always think of him when I have Polos

Which reminds me - in Britain, you could quite happily go into a pub and say, "Do you do fags behind the bar?"
I always wonder what would happen if you tried that in the US!

Well, I timed my day to stop with quite a bit of cleverness methinks.
I went out on the lash on Friday night, and had my last fag about 2 or 3 am Saturday. Then spent all day in bed, other than getting up to go for a pee or something to eat, and a quick browse of the net.
I have not left the house since I got home early hours of Saturday. I really don't trust myself to not buy any fags. :-o
-edit
Fooking hell this cravings malarkey is fooking killing me!!!! Think I may just have got myself banned from aw.net. Ooops.
I can't bloody sleep either. :pissed: :pissed:

I need cyanide caps!!
No, just a lot of patience and some determination, not that I've had to give up myself (never started), but I've seen many people close to me try. You'll get over them, just don't expect it to happen over night, good luck dude :-)

The best I ever managed was for 2 days, and that was only cos I had a slipped disc and completely f****d my back,so I couldn't walk to the shop :-x
Good luck fighting the cravings.. I'm just off to have one on your behalf, and I promise I wont enjoy it :-)
-
@All
Thanks for the kind words of encouragement.
Well it's been three whole days now with out a fag, and it's been so fooking difficult. I have no finger nails left, and stomped to the shop to buy some about 9pm tonight, but by the time i'd got there i'd calmed down, so i just bought two huge bags of jelly babies. :-)
Can't wait to see my little boys face on Friday when he realises I don't stink anymore. :-D:-D:-D:-D:-D

Much nicer than cigarettes!!! :-)
Actually, Keeping busy is the best way to fight any addiction... and going for a long walk is a good way of keeping busy and having some "quality time" with yourself to think things over. If you happen to have a bag of Jelly Babies with you... so much the better.

Yeah, I remember when I was a child and I would visit my Grandfather (who smoked) and it was really unpleasent... then he gave up (after his heart by pass surgury) and he always had a bag of chocolate eclairs with him, and I liked him a lot more after that :-)

This is a big thing to notice, most cig cravings come in waves, and will generally pass within a few minutes, it's just the building anxiety/craving during those few minutes can drive you crazy. When I quit I started carrying around 2 one-liter bottles filled with ice-cold water, and whenever I started to feel a craving I'd drown it by drinking from them.
So yeah, for 2 weeks I was pissing every 20 minutes, and for a good month and a half I was still using the bathroom every hour, but it was definitely worth it. Keep with it, as some others have said, it's all about finding ways to distract yourself when you're craving.
Good Luck!

:-) My Grandad stopped smoking when I was ten after having a lung removed. God knows why I started really. It's ten years this month since I started smoking everyday.

I've been doing that too, the colder the better I find at the moment.

Maybe I should lock myself in my room with a sock and Jenna's greatest hit's DVD? ;-)

Greetings mdma,
Hope you get over it soon! For the meantime, try to focus on some other things to get rid of those cravings, like, try online gaming to pass the time or an indoor sport like table tennis with a friend, that would do, hopefully.
Or better yet, eat chocolate!!! Lots'o Chocolate!!! :-o Unless you don't have any sweet tooths. Anyway, Good luck mdma.
Regards,

water will wash out the toxins from the cigarettes - and really necessary thing if you want to quit. eating alot of sweets will just get you fat. not a good substitute if the goal is to get healthy.

@T_Bone
I can't reply on your aw.net thread as i'm banned, so i'll reply here.
It's been absolute fookin tortue, but it is getting easier. I haven't smoked a single fag since 02:00am last saturday morning.
I've gone from 20 or 30 Embassy No1 a day to nothing at all.
Cold turkey is the only way, I've been trying to give up for ten years and I've used all the NRT stuff available. Even some tablets from the doctor, which kinda worked but not completely.
I wanna see my son become a man, every time I'm tempted to buy a pack, I just think of how proud he will be of me for not smoking. Works everytime so far.
-
You do a good thing MDMA! :-) You'll soon enough be able to enjoy the taste of freshly newborn air :-)
Cleaning the house, and especially the curtains and sheets, will encourage you too to keep on stopping.

Thanks, It's getting slightly easier as time passes. I can't believe I've lasted 6 days already without smoking.
I see my son tommorow, and I can't wait to see his little face when I tell him. He'll be really pleased.

That is not as great as it sounds, you should see some of the heifers I've been with when I've been rat arsed! :-o
Good luck with the quittin', it's been a whole week for me now. The last couple of days my chest felt like it was being crushed, but has eased off today. I have a really icky throat though, and I keep coughing all the time, which is odd as I never had a smokers cough when I smoked!

I took him to see a steam train this afternoon, and we were just sat down messing about waiting for it to come, and he just said out of nowhere "Thanks for stopping smoking Dad, I love you." and gave me a hug. It was great. :-)

Nope. It's the best thing to do, when you quit smoking. Worked for me. I just started doing Tai Chi and Wing Chun exercises in the morning and weight training at night. Helped curb the craving big time.
Also introduced me to a lot of strippers that lived in my apartment at the time.

You still need to find your inner soft spot :-) (darn, do I remember the hairy chest of that friendly Judo teacher )
Btw. Judo is a very civilized, tactical sport. "just huggin and rolln' on the floor' is like saying a videogame is just about pushing buttons.
Plus, your wife would be very happy if you'd learn a movement or two :-D

Smoking is beautiful..... and I wish I was one of those people who could just "smoke socially" without getting addicted all over again! :-(
Guess I gotta be very gratefull to my dad, who learned me smoking cigars at quite a young age (7), wich kept me from cigarettes when I was at the age of puberty. Nowadays I smoke once in the month, 2 months a small box of cigars, but that's it :-)
-

Hey T-bone, how's things?
I'm trying to stop smoking as well, doesn't help when all my friends smoke as well, both my housemates, and both my sisters, grrr....
Two things I found helpful when I gave up in the past (for 6 months and for 9 months):
- Don't tell anyone you're giving up [a) Because actions speak louder than words b) Because, seriously, smokers may try and help you fail :-(]
- Sod all these replacement patches, chewing gum etc, just do it cold turkey...
-

That's what I thought i'd have to do, but all weekend in bed worked just as good.
Go out on Friday night, and get fecking smashed out of your face on whatever poison you like best. Smoke 60 fags over the course of the night, and come home at 3am with no fags, and no money in your pockets. Take to bed with a 2 litre bottle of water and the TV remote. Don't get up until sunday. :-)

It was, which makes it all the more shameful that I smoked last night! :-(

I threw the packet away this morning, and I can't say I've craved it yet today. Back on the wagon now.
Sorry, but I must do this :whack: Chin up dude, it's really hard going cold turkey, you just gotta keep at it :-)

I'll never forget one of my all time favourite Amiga.org quotes came from you in a heated debate with someone else on here.

Personally I wouldn't entertain that thought in case it got me thinking it was okay to have one whenever I was out. Then before you know it... :-(
Just start again; completely destroy the pack you bought if it's any source of temptation. You were making us all very proud for you. :-)

Sounds like good advice to me. Maybe a cigar on my birthday and christmas (Seeing as I've split up with the missus and a blow job is off the menu now! ;-))

Well, that was Monday night and I haven't had a fag since, and it's now Thursday.
I blame Karlos, for giving Leander the wrong directions, causing me to be standing on my own infront of three tobbacanists shops for an hour in the middle of Rusholme.
It's all your fault Karlos!!!! ;-)

I can highly reccomend cigars. When you discover the virtues of a good (rather big - soft taste) cigar, the taste of a siggy will be gross.
ehm, well, also vice versa btw. :-/

Trying again after I finish this pack.
I'm going to get good old fashioned drunk when the first fit hits.

Nooooooooo... Seriously, get really really drunk tonight, and smoke yourself stupid. Then spend all day in bed tomorrow. Don't leave the house for two days, and you'll be free! :-D

@MDMA
If it makes you feel any better, I started smoking again. :-?
*laughs* I have to crash a corporate party tonight, in the hopes I can get a job at a bank. I guess I started smoking again, so I would fit in.

I haven't smoked today!
Yet.
I got smashed last night and have spent most of the day in bed sleeping off the hangover. I was offered a rollie earlier, and turned it down, but now I'm getting cravings.....
Tomorrow night I'm gonna try and pull, a lady-friend might, err take my mind of the tobacco ;-)

Drink from a bottle of ice cold water until you can't drink any more. Seems to work for me each time I get a craving.
If you pull, what about the obligatory post-coital smoke?
It's the law! ;-)

I quitted at the age of 15, throwing away an almost full pack of cigarettes. Happened within a second.

Can you imagine, how much character one has, with rejecting ALL those cigarettes!

yes!
i've seen people not able to stop!
it's more insidious than other drugs (not that i have personal experience, of course)
I wish my cousin could have stopped! she might still be alive. :-(

Almost all my friends smoke :-/
And when I was in hospital for a minor surgery, I heard a man was being told by a docter he was going to die because of lung cancer, caused by excessive smoking - and the man was very calm, he knew it already.
I HATE that.

There was something on the North West news the other night about research into kids that start smoking, suggesting that family influences may actually be stronger than peer pressure when it comes to picking up the habit.
My mum smokes, as did my grandad, uncle and neighbours etc. They were all adamant that we shouldn't start smoking, yet they all seemed so unwilling to stop. As a kid that looks massively hypocritical, but luckily for me, I couldn't stand the smell; frankly I found it repulsive and had no wish whatsoever to start.
Since then, however, I've had cigars on a fair few occasions, and don't mind saying that I enjoyed them (not that your mouth feels too good next morning ). The fact that I in no way felt cravings for them proves to my mind the long held belief many smokers, my folks included, have that cigs are laced with substances to enhance their addictiveness.

Yup, that sounds about right. I smoke about a pack a day. If I smoke American Spirits, I can cut that down to half, since they burn so long.
-
mdma wrote:

My entire family smokes. I didn't start smoking, until *AFTER* I got out of the military and was in college. Of course, I did a lot of things that I shouldn't have done, during those times, which is why I probably never finished Uni. :-(
