I have just installed a 6Gb Hitachi HD on my A1200 but the HDtools reference is only saying it is 16mb. What am I doing wrong?
I have Kickstart 3.1 roms freshly installed with a new Workbench. The Hitachi is a 2.5 inch laptop drive.
Help.

Kickstart supports only drives up to 4GB.
-
Is there no work around for a drive 2 gb larger?
-
The drive will work fine even though it is 2 GB larger. Just don't go beyound the first 4 GB of the drive.
Yu could also install SmartFileSystem or Professional FileSystem to take advantage of the full 6 GB. Or OS3.5 or 3.9 for that matter.
-
Sorry I have been away from the Amiga for so long but where where would I get hold of these filesystem drivers you suggest? Thanks
-
SmartFileSystem are available at www.aminet.net and the upgrade version I can not remember the homepage for. PFS, OS3.5 and OS3.9 can be bought in online Amiga shops, at least OS3.5 and OS3.9.

download SFS 1.239 for 68K from:
http://home.wtal.de/js/

I will try that but I am using my PC to download stuff but haven't figured out how to transfer it yet. I have ordered a transfer program but I am still waiting for it to arrive.
Thanks

Hi there,it is a good thing i read your post,i was thinking about buying a 40Gb HD for my A1200,and now i know how to do it.Thanks! :-D

@webman
Transfer is easy. You can use 720 kb PC formatted disks in Amiga. Just boot up your Workbench and transfer PC0: from the DOSDrivers drawer on your Storage disk to the same drawer on your Workbench disk. Pop in the PC formatted disk and you have access to the files on it (in 8.3 format only though :-()

I thought that the kickstart supported larger drives, but that FFS didn't support larger partitions than 4 Gb. :-?
-
The HDToolBox isn't reading the drive geometry correctly. You probably need to get the specs (heads, cylinders, etc.) from the manufacturer and enter them yourself.
I have a 20GB IBM/Hitachi in my A1200 that was detected correctly. But, in my A4000D the WD 120GB came up as 35GB. I had to manually enter all of the geometry (as well as do some LBA math).
As stated before, without additional software, you should keep the partitions below the 4GB boundry. (Otherwise, anything written above 4GB will overwrite the start of the disk.)
-
I tried entering the drive geometry but ended up with a negative address range in kb. I will try the PC DOS suggestion.
-
With Kickstart/OS 3.1 the ffs is only abel to write to 2GB Partitions and the OS itself is only able to address the first 4GB of a Harddisk. Even if you can install mount etc a bigger Partition or Harddisk as soon as you filled up the 4GB it will start at the first blocks of the Harddisk continuing writing and at that point you have OVERWRITTEN your RDB !!!
To go over the 2 and 4 GB barrier you have to install OS3.5 or OS3.9. But even with OS3.5/OS3.9 there is one restriction. The FIRST Partition may NOT be in any case bigger than 2GB (Because at startup there is only Kickstart 3.1 available, the rest will be loaded/patched when booting)

It would be nice to get 2GB on the HD at the moment, but os 3.5/3.9 are eluding me at present. I do Have an Apollo 68040 with 32meg of Ram so coping with the OS would be no problem.
Thanks

Download the TD64 patch from the www.ami.ga site, and install it as the docs describe. Try to use HDInstTools from Aminet instead of HDToolbox, it might help as well.
-
I will try that and get back to you. Thanks.
-
Aminet seems to be offline. I have been trying all day to get on and I'm on 2mb Broadband.
-
For the time being you should be able to use the 4GB of the drive, get HDInstTools from Aminet, it should do the trick.

@webman
Try this instead http://de5.aminet.net/aminet/

The drive operates as 2 2616mb partitions. I am unable to push it any further. thanks anyway.
