Title: OSViews article on QNX and the Amiga
Post by: InTheSand on July 01, 2005, 01:47:05 AM
Hi,

OSViews has an article about "How QNX Failed The Amiga" (http://osviews.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=4830&mode=thread&order=0&thold=-1), which might be of interest.

The comments after the article are worth reading too.

Cheers,

- Ali

Thats a pretty fictional account on OSNews.  Its interesting it showing up on that site given its history.

I don't know why someone would rewrite (change) Amiga history now, after all these years.

Gateway was the the owner of the Amiga at the time and there was some sort of internal struggle taking place within Gateway.  Amiga Inc was a division of Gateway.

Not sure of the exact sequence of events, but the story goes something like this ...

Amiga Inc decided to create the next generation Amiga, AmigaNG, based on a "mystery chip" and OS 5.

Amiga Inc contracted QNX to provide the foundation for the new OS.  Presumably, Amiga Inc itself was going to provide all gaming, graphics, multimedia, audio, and user-interface programming interfaces.  I don't know who pissed off who first or worst, but QNX revealed screenshots of a solution based on QNX and Jim Collas, Amiga Inc, announced they were dropping QNX and going with Linux instead.  Within a few months, Jim Collas resigned, Bill McEwan was gone and Amiga Inc went dark.

At the time of the screenshots, the QNX product was running on x86 technology, and it was a beauty to behold.

Pretty depressing article if you ask me. There could have been counltess reasons why this path failed, sounds like rubbish to me.
God, I need a beer now.
