Title: Blizzard 1260/50 heatproblems?
Post by: leofoe on June 25, 2005, 11:36:55 AM
Do I have to expect heatproblems installing a Blizzard 1260 in a desktop?

The Bilzzard 1260 will be very hot, but you can use it in a desktop A1200 without problems. You need a better PSU than a standard A1200 PSU and don't put the trapdoor back to allow more airflow.

No, 68060 CPUs have a very high heat tolerance.

Neverthless I've noticed a big difference of temperature between a 68060 closed inside the trapdoor and a 68060 in an opened trapdoor.
Probably if you can mantain the CPU at a lower temperature, you'll give more life to it  :-)

Non I'm building a simple "system" to keep fresh the Blizzard. If you want, I can send you some pictures or sketches of my little project  :-P

Will an A500 PSU do the job?

The heavy A500 PSUs will often be satisfactory to run the Blizzard 1260 (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=43&products_id=262) - but bear in mind that other peripherals that you have may be power hungry.

The Blizzard 1260 (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=43&products_id=262) is suprisingly cool for a heavy duty accelerator - this is because it uses 3v not 5v as found in the hotter 040 based accelearators.

An A500 PSU is strong enough. I also have 2x64 MB SIMMS, SCSI-kit, Notebook Harddisk and also the B1260. It works very well.

@amiga1260:

If you stay away from 3.5" harddrives, the stock A1200 PSU will get you quite far. It is atleast enough to power my A1200 with a Blizzard1260, a stick of 128MB ram, the stock 170MB 2.5" harddrive, a CNet-CN40BC PCMCIA-network card and a little 50x50mm fan.
