Post by: Mikey_C on June 24, 2005, 10:48:36 PM
Didn't think this warrented a new news item.

Finally, the much requested Classic Amiga Samba guide is now on-line.
Surf on over to:-  Amiga Samba Idiots Guide (http://samba.amigaworld.net) - You don't have to be an Idiot, to use it.

Also, Amiga Samba OS4 Guide in English and German available.

@Chain

I sincerely hope you meant "Short" Shot sounds rather painful :-)

Thank me once you get it working though, that's the crucial bit :-)

Good and useful job, indeed :-)

now if i were a "##### ball guy" (that i don't . . . err ok sometimes) i would ask on how you have pointed on the Assign thing for Samba.

Wouldn't be better refer to the boot partition as SYS:? (instead of Workbench:)

I'm not sure to who is targeted this "HowTo" . . . to a really, really newbie (don't think so) or not? because if it would be an "idiot proof" Tutorial, to evidence even the "obvious" things would be very useful.

Thanks :-)

PS- your Assign for Genesis is "custom" too.

There isn't a Law that says you must call your Amiga Partition SYS: I have always called mine Workbench (until I got OS4) and it has always worked fine. I know I am also not the only one who has done so.

The Genesis assing isn't custom, it's how it comes straight off my OS3.9 CD when I installed internet options from the OS3.9 CD

:-)

i would like to remember you that, although "there isn't a Law for bla, bla", whatever you call your boot partition, SYS: is good as well.

No one call it SYS: but if you type SYS: in a shell, you will find you boot partition name . . . whatever its labeled.

EDIT just to be more precise:

"assign Wokbench:Samba" - is good ONLY IF your boot partition is labeled Workbench

"assign SYS:Samba"- is good for all

ahem

Yes you make a good point.
One which I will address when I get a chance

I have to rename files and re-edit pages etc

I'll change it to your suggestion when I do.

Thanks

THANK YOU!!!!!!!

It seems you got some harsh returns there, srry about that, some ppl. in the world forget you are doing this for free and in your own spare time.  For that, and my smooth running Samba, I thank you!

Uhhuh? That's a bit uncalled for.

Using fixed volumename instead of SYS: is a clear mistake, and pointing it out and getting it corrected is a good thing. Nothing to do with "harsh returns".

Does anyone know if SWAT works in the version recommended in the guide. I cant seem to access it even though file sharing works fine.

Cheers.

I'm considering buying a NAS drive, does samba faicilitate access to NAS drives (or for that matter a SAN)
or am I better of with for instance Envoy3?
