I just got a couple of 1200 3.1 roms for my Amiga, but the data on them is different, so I'm curious if it would be unwise to use them together, or what does this mean exactly?
The 1st chip has this:
KIckstart v40.68
Amiga 1200 U6A
83-97 Amiga inc
etc
The 2nd this:
Kickstart V 40.63
AMiga 1200 U6B
83-94 Amiga Inc
etc
-
AFAIK 40.63 is not for a1200 (500-600-2000)
There is an adhesive label on top?
-
Mismatched chips probably won't work. I'm a little confused with the labeling however as I didnt think that there were more then one build actually made into chips for any one system. I'm not at home, so I cant look up the delta between 40.63 & 40.68, but it was probably pretty minor. We used to get new builds every week or two from Commodore, and run them with superkicks on our 3000's or the 3640 set for superkick on the A4000's.

@XDelusion
A1200 KS 3.1 ROM is two chips. Part numbers 391773-01 (high) and 391774-01 (low)
You can't combine different part number ROM chips.
-
Mine have stickers on them, and say nothing more than what I typed out, there are no 391773-01 (high) and 391774-01 (low) numbers anywhere...
If I try it, do you think it would fry?

Wierd, I thought 40.63 was only ever released as a single 512k Rom for the a500/600/2000. Maybe it's one of the early VillageTronic releases?
Anyway, it won't hurt to plug it in, but if it isn't a labelling mistake then it won't boot.

whot! i didn't know. 40.63 for 1200/4000 as well!.
Just found this info about 3.1
40.63- 3.1 Update A500, A2000, A3000, A4000 et A1200
40.68- 3.1 Enhancement Intuition (RTG), Layers.library
40.70- 3.1 Enhancement scsi.device

bho!!!

It wont fry anything, if they labels are correct, it probably wont boot, if it does boot, and doesnt crash real quick and real often its probably a misprint on one of the ROMs.

Be extra careful to orientate the chips properly, or else you WILL fry something, at least the chips.
-
I was always under the assumption that v40.63 was the single chip version for the a 500/600/2000 and 40.68 was the 2 chip version for the 1200/3000/4000.
I have v40.68 in may A1200T, but I use v40.63 in UAE (I downloaded a priate one off the interweb because I was too lazy to figure out how to grab the roms)
-
I popped them in, A on bottom, B on top, with the chips to the right most side.
At first it only booted to a black screen, I then turned it off and on again, booted all the way but my serial mouse would not work anymore.
Turned off again, soft booted etc. Same thing, no mouse.
Put 3.0 roms back in, now it keeps doing the same thing, but occasionally if I softboot, the serial mouse will work, but not all the time like it used to...
EDIT
If I boot up and the mouse does not work with the 3.0 roms, I just unplug the serial mouse, plug it back in and then it works all of a sudden, will test with 3.1 roms.
...and that works too, same thing though, I wonder why the serial port is suddenly acting up.
Anyhow WorkBench says I have Kickstart 40.68 so I assume that maybe there is nothing wrong with this set, and that they only needed to update one of the two chips?

I'm suprised it booted at all (assuming it was a 40.63 rom)
But any changes to the code in the roms affects both chips.
Think of it like a pair of books, first word in a sentance written to book 1, next word to book2 etc etc, swapping one book with slightly different contents will mean that sooner or later you'll be reading rubbish.
Edit:
Forgot one important thing.. there's a checksum at the end of the rom, if it doesn't match the computed checksum on startup you get a red screen. So it looks like the 40.63 chip is mislabelled

Must be... or I'm pulling rabits out of my @ss. :)

:roflmao:
Just make sure you've got a matching pair of rabbits :-)
