Title: 68060's temperature
Post by: starf81 on June 15, 2005, 11:47:06 PM
Hi!

I've read and listened to that the 68060 is a "cool" CPU and it doesn't need any fan or heatsink.

Now I'm testing the mine (Blizzard 1260) and I've noticed that it becomes very hot. However the computer is very stable.

Is it normal?

THANKS!
Alex

Yes.  It should get hot when in use.  But, it shouldn't be so hot that you burn your finger if you touch it.  ;-)

It certainly wouldn't do any harm to throw a heatsink and/or fan on a 68060.

The MC68060 is alot more heat tollerant than the XC68060 you find on most cards including the Blizzard1260. I'd put a heatsink on that chip right away and if there's room then also a fan.

Normal operation temperature is around 90 degrees. Processors aren't like humans. They like it hot compared to our 20 degrees. :)

If my 060 was at 90degs, id sure put a HSF on it. Like, now.

:)

90degs i think you will find, will burn you kinda quickley.

(Providing we are talking Deg C)

If it reaches 90 degrees it will most likely die on you (modern CPUs will switch off when they reach about 70 degrees c).

Like "all" electronics the colder you can get it the better! It will also increase its lifespan.

eh, eh , eh :-) 90C degrees a 060!?!

anyway . . . there are different revisions/mask around.

my XC clocked at 60 Mhz, reaches 39 degrees without heatsink and about 36 with a heatsink (no need of a fan).

Another one (an earlier revision) runs "hotter" (at least 4-5 degrees more)

In both situation theres no problems at all. (if installed on a tower or with a good air flow.

Last but not least, i think that the quality of the power stabilization/ripple, could rise the components themperature as well.

I just read the docs again... 70 degrees is the absolute max indeed, so forget I said 90  :-o

If your 060 hits 70 Deg C, worry.

My 040 never got that hot. Nowhere near it.

If thats the book-max temp, you dont want to run that hot.

Id say 45degC should be a good temp to try and get below.

to be more precise, when my XC was clocked to 50 Mhz, it was cold to the touch (in a tower with a good airflow).

The 70C degrees reported on the Motorola 060 datasheet, are as maximum degrees in "only Jesus knows" enviroment (test/stress-quality control)

Inside a desktop A1200, its another thing. (on a BlizPPC is the PPC-ram controller-voltage regulator that rises the themperature even of the 060)

Anyway if you use the 060 inside a desktop A1200 and its not overclocked, i don't think that you need ant extra cooling. (or if you you want to be 100% safe, put a small heatsink . . .just for the sake of)

Well my 50 mhz 060 in my tower with almost no airflow and no heatsink is just warm to touch, I'd say it's about 40 deg C or something.

I'm not sure what mask it is, but it does have a big 2002 written in a big font in the middle.

Thanks for all replies... now I've placed a fan and the CPU is more cool. I have only to find a "definitive" way to place it because now is too temporary...

Last time I checked my body seemed to like 37 centigrade...

Yes it's normal.
The Blizzard 1260 with XC68060 runs hot like a horny hooker working overtime...
