I can't wait to see what comes out of this.

I'll be watching this also :)

I've been on the mail list for a couple of years because of Java. I got the email for a free t-shirt, but was too busy at work and too slow to respond. Only 5000 shirts and I missed out. :-(

Not to be a wet blanket, but am I the only one not expecting much?
This is Soplaris, after all. What relevance does it still have?
Sure, there are a few programs which, for some reason, still only run on it. However, if ERSI can't be bothered to port ARCINFO to other unices like OS X, what makes anybody thing they will bother to port it to OpenSolaris/non-Sparc?
The best they can hope for is to have some bugs squashed. That's what Apple got by releasing Darwin. It didn't open the flood gates of users hungry to use a UNIX with unique features like IOKit or real time Mach threads. I can't even name a unique feature of Soplaris.

Ummm, been in a large IT shop lately? Solaris and Sun hardware are still quite popular, especially for large DBMS installations (e.g. Oracle and Informix) and ERP solutions (e.g. PeopleSoft and SAP). There's something to be said for a proprietary OS running on proprietary hardware. Anyhow, I think OpenSolaris will mostly benefit the x86 crowd, which has been all but ignored by Sun in the past. (If you've ever run Solaris x86, you know what I'm talking about.) But most importantly, I got a free t-shirt.

FYI: www.blastware.org (http://www.blastware.org/) - "Polaris is the OpenSolaris port to PowerPC".

Click here for a treasure trove of Soplaris bashing (http://catalog.com/hopkins/unix-haters/slowlaris/)
I especially love this one:
VP: "Admin!! What the {bleep} is this thing running on my machine?"
Admin: "It's Solaris, sir."
VP: "Get it off of my machine at once!"
Admin: "But sir, Ed Zander told me that you should be running Solaris now."
VP: "Zander, huh? I'll fix him. Is he running Solaris?"
Admin: "No sir."
VP: "Why not?"
Admin: "If he ran Solaris, he wouldn't be able to get any work done."
VP: "Very well, restore my machine to SunOS, and put this Solaris crap on Zander's machine."
Admin: "But sir..."
VP: "That's an order! And tell him Scott gave you the directive himself!"
Admin: "Yes, sir."
-----later----
Zander: "Admin!! What the {bleep} is this thing running on my machine?"
Admin: "It's Solaris, sir."
Zander: "Get it off of my machine at once!"
Admin: "But sir, Scott McNealy told me that you should be running Solaris now."
Zander: "McNealy, huh? I'll fix him. Is he running Solaris?"
