Title: DKB: 1240
Post by: XDelusion on June 14, 2005, 09:01:49 AM
I have a chance at picking up a DKB: 1240 with 32Mb of RAM at a decent price, but I've been told by the seller that it only works well with OS 3.0 (and below I assume), but OS 3.1 is unstable, unless you remove the RAM.

Anyone have a clue as to what could be the source of this problem?

Does OS 3.9 have the same issues?

I read on this site:

http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/search.pl?product=dkb1240

You can use kickstart 3.1 if you upgrade the firmware.

And how does one upgrade the firmware himself?

All I see are SCSI drivers.

OT: A little confusing name for beeing an Amiga hardware?
1240 usually means that it has an 040 but in this you have an 030@40MHz or even worse @28MHz.  :-o

It's something at least...

...can't find any 040's at a reasonable price, everyone is asking near $400 it seems, at which rate I might as well hold out for the Colfire, or an 060 worth case scenario.

You can't upgrade the firmware youself, that I'm pretty sure of. I had one of these boards once, I'm glad I haven't gotten rid of it.

Stick to Phase5 boards, here you know what you get.

Anyone know where I can get this flashed in that case?

Also, who owned the company that built this card, and what became of them?

would a softkick or what ever you call it when you load the Kickstart 3.1 rom via software, get around this?

You can upgrade the firmware yourself that would make the card work with KS3.1 if any ram is installed on the card.

You can flash it just like you can flash any Phase 5 accelerator card. There is an on-board flashrom on DKB Cobra and DKB 1240 accelerators.

The DKP Ferret (http://www.l8r.net/install/hard_drive_cont/dkb.ferret.DMS) SCSI utility disk has got the flash file on it. Simply UnDMS this image onto a floppy and it will become a bootable disk. Boot your A1200 with it and make sure your DKB1240 or Cobra has got no ram installed on it if you have 3.1 roms installed. If you still have 3.0 roms, it doesn't matter if there is ram on the accelerator or not. Follow the instructions and viola! Your DKB accelerator is 3.1 compatible.

Ok, and one final question on this thing (I think).

Does it matter what speed FPU I toss on it, and does anyone understand how to activate it?

There is a jumper, J3, which sets the FPU speed to same as CPU or alternate crystal. Jumper J3 is between the crystal sockets so its very hard to miss!

Install your crystal for FPU and set the jumper if you wish to have different speeds.
