Title: UK Amiga users
Post by: alx on June 08, 2005, 04:36:33 PM
There's currently a thread on AW.net looking at the location of UK Amiga users (http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=12896&forum=16).  Obviously not everyone visits AW.net, so if you don't want to become a member there just to vote, please reply here (but don't then vote there as well ;-)) - the options are:

Scotland
North East
North West
Yorkshire and Humber
East Midlands
West Midlands
Wales
N. Ireland
South West England
South East (not including Essex)
London
East of England (inc Essex)

If you post on other forums with UK users, it'd be great if you could tell them as well...

---edit---

Thanks to the people who have PMed me, but if anyone else wants to take part can they please reply to this thread - it'll keep it on the front page, and make it easier for the results to be read when I'm offline.

Thanks for mentioning it Alx

I would have conducted a similar idea here but unless I am mistaken, there is no facilities for polls on this site yet.

This is just a survey/poll to determine the numbers of actual amiga users in the UK, which in recent years has been in steep decline, so much so, that I believe we are now well behind sweden and norway in terms of users with Germany well out in front

We can't post polls as topics, but the mods can and do post polls for us on the main page.

If you want the poll here just ask Wayne or any of the others.

btw, alx put in a vote for Scotland please :-)

--edit--

Hmmm, the poll on the main page is blank...

Well, as it stands, I have not published a new update to the map for some time, because it appears that, sadly there is only about 150 Amiga users left in the UK :-(

Not many is it?

Worrying, considering that the "big" Amiga magazines only closed down in 2000 or so, and they must have had a circulation in the thousands to stay alive even until then - although perhaps their demise hastened the downspiral of users?

I suppose that some users might only login at weekends though; we'll see the full picture then...

Well as it stands (including the 2 votes from Amiga.org) there are 200 Active Amiga users in the UK by the looks of it.
I expect a few more votes will be added, but I think it's not gonna go much further, say 220 tops

Wow Sad day indeed :-(

Hum,
Yeah low figures indeed,
But not that low…
(I e there are loads more UK users here at A.org than the 2 votes would imply…)

I'll bet there's a good number of people here that have actually voted at AW themselves...

Better make that 200 active users that have read Amiga.org and Amigaworld.net in the last week AND could be bothered to vote.

BTW, seeing as I've got 4 Amigas, can I vote another 3 times ?

@Vincent

Indeed, no arguments there. If however, anyone on here hasn't got an AW account and would like to tell everyone they exist, then, please look at the Map above, ensure where you are (borders are a bit funny) and post on this here thread.

I will add your vote to the map totals as I update it.

Thank you all :-)

I've got the bare bones of a website rather similar to the Linux Counter (http://counter.li.org/) that would be useful for tracking Amiga users anywhere.  Someone had volunteered to help with the scripting (very simple php) and had almost got everything working, but I cannot seem to get in contact with him any more.  If you can code in PHP and want to have a look at getting it working, give me a (P)Email :-)

BTW welcome to A.org :-D

No you aren't there seems to be a few in your area. :-)

Have you voted? or would you like me to add you to the tally?

Unless I am wrong, I will add you to the Yorkshire/Humber region on the map, correct?

The Amiga.org QuickStats say:
Users 3689

Maybe Amiga.org should purge users who haven't logged in for 6 months but still, the end result will only show how many Amiga owners are online with their Amiga. Since Amiga browsers etc. are way behind IE/Firefox then surely it's not too surprising?

I bet a lot of people still use their Amigas as games consoles, business use, video production etc.

Maybe these offline people still go to Amiga shows and thus would still be part of the community, even reading the rare Amiga magazines in European newsagents and buying new hardware (but not going online).

There are 6 million Amigas in the world and on Sat 23rd July 2005 (Amiga's 20th birthday) I'm sure a lot more than 200 people in the UK will be still making use of a machine so versatile and powerful!

After all, people fight and scram to get Amiga stuff on eBay - and there's new people coming into things by playing with UAE and noticing AmigaOS4/AmigaOne stuff!

:-D
