Title: A3000 speed problem.
Post by: guest1255 on June 07, 2005, 06:51:43 AM
My A3000 25MHz has some strange problems.
It has 2mb chip + 6 mb fas memory

1. I did ad the Golem Memory form my A2000 ( 4mb )
If i turn this memory on the total memory shows still 6 mb and if i turn it off it shows 2 mb total other memory???

Strnage?

2.Sys info says that my A3000 is as fast as 0.7 times than normal A3000,,  hmm how can that be? And only 6 times faster than A500 ???

Can anybody help where to check if there is something that can be changed by jumpers to speed it up or should i do anything by software?

TIA.

Zorro II memory is much slower than the onboard 32bit memory.  Not sure of the total amount discrepancy though.

Ditch the ZII RAM board and see if you can track down some static column ZIPs.

Thank you, ill try it first...
How much faster is the A3000 vs A500 ? any ideas?
and one offtopic question ( sorry my habit ),,,
I did try the winuae but there is no 68030 option is it so that A3000 cant be emulated?
Thanks..

I dont quite understand... do you have 6mb in Zip Ram on the motherboard?

I did add the Golem Memory from my A2000 ( 4mb )

Ok.

Erm STILL shows 6? Shouldnt it ordinarily show 8mb? (2mb chip + 6mb fast = 8mb total)

You said you had 2mb chip + 6mb fast, then you tried to add another 4mb fast with this ZII board. With it you get a total of 6mb, without it you get 2mb. The results seem to show you dont have any fast ram other than this board.

You will get results like this if you have no fast ram.

Sorry for the wrong terms.
It has 2 mb graphics memory and says 6 mb other memory.

When i add the golem 4mb ,, the graphics memory (2mb)is ok but other memory drops to 2  mb. :) negative memory? :) :)

Without the Golem in you should have 1:1 of an A3000 UNLESS you have an early (and rare) 16MHz A3000

You have added:

CPU >NIL: FastROM Cache Burst

to your startup-sequence right?

If not, reboot and try your becncmarks again.

THe machine runs at 25 MHz
And in the "CPU >NIL: FastROM Cache Burst" is missing from the startup-sequence. Should i add it?

Sure, right after the setpatch and version command lines.

I've got more ZIPs if you're interested.  I'll have to go and look at them to see what type they are though.

Good luck!

Hi,

     I've got eight (8) ZIPs left.  They're Toshiba TC514258AZ-80 if you're interested.

Hi,

$5 for the ZIPs and shipping is fine by me. PMail me for more on that...

As for your startup-sequence, it should be something like this:

----------------------------------------
C:SetPatch QUIET
Version >NIL:
FailAt 21
Cd c:
Addbuffers >NIL: DF0: 32
CPU >NIL: FastROM Cache Burst
MakeDir RAM:T RAM:Clipboards RAM:ENV RAM:ENV/Sys
Copy >NIL: ENVARC: RAM:ENV ALL NOREQ
Assign >NIL: ENV: RAM:ENV
Assign >NIL: T: RAM:T
Assign >NIL: CLIPS: RAM:Clipboards
Assign >NIL: PRINTERS: DEVS:Printers
Assign >NIL: KEYMAPS: DEVS:Keymaps
Assign >NIL: LOCALE: SYS:Locale
Mount >NIL: DEVS:DOSDrivers/~(#?.info)
Resident >NIL: C:Execute PURE
SetEnv Workbench $Workbench
SetEnv Kickstart $Kickstart
UnSet Workbench
UnSet Kickstart
IPrefs
Path >NIL: RAM: C: C:BIN SYS:System S: SYS:Prefs SYS:Tools
Execute S:User-Startup
LoadWB -debug
EndCLI >NIL:
-------------------------------

Backup (rename) your existing starup-sequence (in case it doesn't like something here) and copy and paste this one into a new startup-sequence file and give it a shot.

If I see a large mushroom cloud from the east, I'll know what happened!

Good luck!

YES YES YES!!!!!
No mushroom here, and Now the sysinfo says
A3000 25MHz  ==  mine is 1.03 faster :)
THANK YOU very much.
Ill get soon the 3.1 roms for the A3000 then ill erase the HD, do i need this command line then also?

Cool!  When OS3.1 is installed (or 3.9 or whatever) it should create a brand new startup-sequence and overwrite the one you just made.  As a rule, I always add the CPU line to any machine I have worked on - and test it for a while to see how it works.  Some machines don't like the "burst" command due to other hardware they may have installed.

Regardless, have fun!

There's no way an A3k could have 6 MB (fast) onboard. You can use 1-4 banks of memory with either 1 MB (4x256Kb chips) or 4 MB (4x1024Kb chips) each - no mixing possible - you could have 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 12 or 16 Meg fast RAM, but not 6 (FastROM uses 512 KB of RAM, but certainly not 2 Megs).

Showconfig tells you where the RAM is at. Chip is $2000-$1FFFFF, Fast grows from $7FFFFFF downwards (to $7400000 if you've got 12 Megs). :-)

@all
Anyone with spare 4 MB static column to sell? Or trade for 4 MB fast page?

When i got this machine the seller was unsure about the memory so was i..
