I decided to get an Apollo CPU for my Amiga. I don't want to go 060 because that is just price rape.
I might be interested in at least a 40Mhz 030, but how would that compare to a 40Mhz 040? What is the diff? More instructions per second?
Where would be a good place to look for an American buyer, and what's the average these boards sell for?
-
Well if you don't mind waiting for one to pop up, try ebay. I got a Apollo 1240 33Mz w/32MB for $90 USD. Works fine and the price is right.
-
will a 1240 33Mhz run DOOM and DOOM II full speed?
-
the 040/40 is at least twice as fast as 030/40. as to doom and doom II: is far as i remember, my 40MHz 040 was able to drive DOOMs full speed in 320x240 Multiscan VGA mode (using CGX-AGA and FBlit, DoomAttack port with WPA c2p "akiko" routines). Go for 040, don`t buy 030! On 040/40 you can fluently play mp3`s in 22kHz stereo mid-quality, which is imppossible with 030s.
-
DOOM and MP3's, that's enough for me, I'm sold, thankx!
I noticed Eytech has 040's for sale. But they never seem to write me back. Are they good to deal with when you live in America? And are there prices supposed to be in USD or something else?
-
I managed to play mp3s fluently on my 030/50mhz with 22kHz MONO mid-quality :-P
-
MONO :P
That's pretty impressive though!

I might sound like an Elbox salesman but if you are after 68*** compatability with loads of speed, check out the Dragon 1200 Coldfire board, it goes for sale at the end of this month.
This may cost closer to the price of an 060 but the extra expansion is worth it and the Shark PPC board will be compatable.
Check it out with this link Dragon 1200 at Elbox (http://www.elbox.com/news_04_12_17.html) :-D
-
040's go really cheaply on UK ebay. but obviously its not a good idea to stick one in the original case plus apollo are crap, there are other companys to choose from

It does? Like it did in january, or for real this time?
-
Ouch! :-o
I do my research, Elbox had a very good reason for the delay. This is the reply I recieved after I emailed them.
My question: I was just wondering as to when the Dragon board will be available as it was to be released Jan 05 and I can't find it in your online store.
The reply: DRAGON 1200 was expected to be on sale in January, but Freescale delayed the
start of the volume production of their newest ColdFire MCF5475.
As for now we have very limited quantity of these new processors.
The last info from Freescale (Motorola) says that the mass production of
MCF5475 processors on which Dragon is based will start at 15 June 2005.
If this becomes true the Dragon sales will start at the end of June.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need further assistance.
Thank you for using Elbox's online support services.
Best regards,
I hope that clears that one up.

Well, you could always use WINUAE or AF6 to get blazing processor speed/awesome sound & graphics at the lowest cost.
-
True... .. but, it feels wrong and my PC is used for work, I prefer to keep only the programmes I need on it.
For classic Amiga software, UAE is pretty good, but as OS4 develops things change, PPC emulation on x86 just ain't happening, what I'm saying is, it's a dead end.
Amiga keyboards feel nicer anyway....mmmmmm.. :-D

Putting a decent PC mobo in an A2000 case with a Catweasel MKIV and you have what I stated above to include a classic keyboard, mouse, joystick, along with that classic Amiga appearance. As for OS4 and gaming, all the best Amiga games worked under OCS/ECS. Eye candy should be left for M$ systems.
-
Do you work for Intel?
I don't see why I can't have great eye candy on my Amiga either, that was why I bought my A1200 all those years ago.
As for the A2000 case, It's a modern Amiga I want, not retro and not emulation.
Damn it man! Defend the faith! :pissed:
-
I have my 1240 in my desktop A1200 with the trapdoor on. I do have a small heatsync/fan on the 040. I am overclocking my 040/25 to 33Mhz and it works fine. I played Doom II Plutonia last night, it ran pretty good around 15 FPS at 320x256.
-
Heh, I played Doom fine on 040/25MHz under AGA. A lot of action at once is kinda rough on it, but on the whole it's fine.
-
Well if the coldfire is coming out that soon, I'll just hold out. I've had my eye on that for a long while now.
As for UAE...
...ha ha ha. Good for classic games, but it is a {bleep}ization of the Amiga OS experiences. It's like what an Amiga would run like, if it was ever ported to a Celeron. :)
-
@ XDelusion: I think I'll do the same. :-D
-
pc mobo in a2k case????????????????
oh {bleep}!
-
the Dragon 1200 Coldfire board, it goes for sale at the end of this month.
I'd be truely amazed if it even comes into existence at the end of this month as a running prototype

:-D :-D I agree.....
UAE is fine for those who like it..(I tried it and didn't
care for it, just not a real Amiga feel) to each his own.
I like the Big Box Amigas .. A2000 & A3000, (haven't owned
an A4000 ..yet :-D , but I'm sure I will)

Elbox seemed to be pretty cofident and it was only 3 days ago I mailed them. With with chips in production on the 15th and expected release for the boards only 2 weeks later, one might be given to the idea that the boards are allready built...mmm :-P
-
To what extent is the coldfire compatible with existing 060 & 040 software? I'm really tempted by it - but if I can't run the older demos/games properly it's essentially useless.
-
That's the problem. Some instructions on a Coldfire are compatible with 68k, others are not. Getting them to run old software will be tricky. IMHO you should be happy with an '060 or upgrade to PowerPC when the ACK accelerator comes out.
-
I'm not worries about playing old games, just running a few apps, most of which are currently still being updated. I should be fine with a Coldfire, I wrote the company and they tell me they should be ready this month (hopefully) as well.
-
It seems like the V4e core used by the MFC5475 is a subset of the '060 instruction set and from our (Amigan) point of view offers comparable compatibility. :-)
