Title: IRC clients?
Post by: altivo on June 01, 2005, 02:46:54 AM
What IRC clients are there that work on the Amiga, and what are the minimum requirements?

I have an A3000T with WB2.1 (KS 2.04), Amitcp 3.0beta2, and Etherbridge 1.2. It works fine with telnet, ftp, and other basic utilities. Amitcp came with AmyIRC, which apparently doesn't really work and never did. Grapevine seems to work with some IRC servers but not all, and as far as I can tell is now unsupported with no source code available. Is AmIRC the only "living" client program? I'm under the impression that it can't run without WB 3.0+ and MUI. Or am I wrong?

AmIRC is the best IRC client by far. Here are the requirements from the guide:

Hardware
--------

AmIRC was written for the Amiga family of computers, and has been
tested on Amiga 500, 1000, 1200, 2000, 3000, & 4000 computers in various
configurations.

Software
--------

AmIRC requires MUI V3.6 or later in order to run.

AmIRC requires KickStart & WorkBench 2.x or later, with setpatch 40.16
installed.

AmIRC020 requires a 68020 or higher CPU and OS3.0 or newer. This
version is optimized for such machines.

If you plan to run a TCP/IP stack and AmIRC among other Internet
applications you should have at least 2 megabytes of RAM.

Maybe you are trying to run the 020 version or you have some MUI classes missing.

Try WookieChat

OS4 PPC and OS3.x 68k

My 2.1 system has no MUI at all. If I remember correctly, that was introduced with 3.0 beta of the WB. Consequently, I haven't even tried AmIRC.

Grapevine runs well with most servers, but a couple (unfortunately the ones I use most) disconnect it immediately when I try to join a channel.

Likewise Wookie, requires 3.x of WB, which I don't really have.

There's an old client called chatbox that you can try, too. I don't know where to find it, however, but google is your friend.

Thanks, I missed chatbox somehow while searching through dozens of fixes for AmIRC on aminet. :)
