Hi all, I am asking this as I am fed up of this problem.
This is the exact same problem on my Amiga as with my PC.
On my Amiga I am using 2 CD rom drives, ok no problem with using them, BUT if I want to use a headset on the front panel of my CD rom drive I get no sound what so ever.
Same with PC, The sound is coming via the Amiga sound ports on the back and through my Sound card on my Mediator no problems there. (sound coming FROM Amiga and GOING to sound card)
So the actual sound is not a problem but with others near by I like to listen through the headset this just wont happen no matter what I do.
Now as with my Amiga I have done the same with the PC.
First I took off the audio cable from both CD rom drives and went through the 44 pin cable that connects to the IDE port on the back, sound works as it should, but not with the headset.
OK I put the audio cable back to the back of the CD rom drives sound again no problem but still not through the heasdset.
It seems no matter what I do the headset port on the front of the CD rom drives just will not work, but the sound through the speakers vie sound card on both the Amiga and PC works perfectly.
Am I missing something here?
This is the same with MP3 files or standard music files on both computers. no sound through the headset port on the front of any of the CD rom drives.
As a matter of Interest on my PC is a DVD rom and a BenQ DVD re-writer.
On my Amiga is a 16x CD rom and a 52x CD rom.
TIA,
Mike....

I wouldn't expect mp3 files to play directly in the CD mechanism anyway - at least I never heard of any CD-Rom drives that will directly play mp3.
The headphone connector of my CD and CDRW work fine, irrespective of their rear connections, so perhaps either your socket(s) or headphones are damaged?

DAMN DAMN bloody DAMN,
A brand new pair of £22.00 head set and they are bloody well damaged.
Crap now they can go back to the shop.
I wasnt expecting a pair that cost that much to be damaged they are brand new.
My wifes work perfectly, and they cost £4.99.
Ohhh well at least I know now.
Thanks for the tip about damaged headset.
PPK Resurection plays fine through my wifes headset.
And yes of course MP3 don t play as I expected.

AFAIK, the only time you should hear sound thru the audio jack on a cdrom is when you play standard audio-cd's.
Edit: Huh? Let me get this right, you get sound from the sound from the amiga(games,mp3,etc) thru the audio jack on the front of the cdrom? I'm confused.

Headset connected to the drive only work if play the audio with the CDROM drive itself.
Reading the tracks from the CD and playing them (either AIFF data, or mp3) will not use the drive to play them, thus no audio comes out from the drive headphone connector.
It's easy to see the difference: Use the drive play button to play and it works. Use the computer to play, and it doesn't.

And not necessarily even then... Modern Windows always goes thru the IDE interface, the analog audio cable is typically ignored.

OK (using wifes headset) on my PC Win XP Pro the one DVD drive has a open and eject button and a play button using the play button I get music through the headset with NO play button on other cd drives on Windows I get no sound.
How ever on my Amiga I get sound on both my CD rom drives and they have no play button just the normal open and eject button.
This is an odd one.
But any way up my wifes cheapo headset works just fine, with normal music files.
Mike.
