just curious as to which you will buy: amigaone or pegasos or both, and your basic specs, as in ram hdd, scsi/ide? monitor? case?
just somthing quick - just out of curiosity
:-D
ill work out my future machine(amigaone) specs soon, and post them later... :)
-
I'll take your position on this, so long as you send your avatar over :-) Woo-Woo!
Hopefully, there will be a "lag time" between the two releases, so I can afford both.
-
for gamers:
Invest in a modern 3D card with as much memory as possible, it helps to offload the CPU and the AGP bus and future games will run fast.
-
How about neither?
I'd rather have a port to some more recent hardware, perhaps Apple. This PowerBook for example.
-
@Strobe
That would be impossible, as Apple refuses to release the specs to their machines.
But you're right; that would be neat! :-)

I will be getting my system by October (hopefully earlier).
AmigaOne
800 MHz XE (But have partially pre-paid, and will ask for the 1.3 GHz to be held for me)
2 Gigs of ram (I never joke about ram, in 1990, I bought 8 1 meg SIMMs, 80 ns, @ $70 each = $560 Can. to have a 9 Meg A2000)
ATI 8500 (no drivers for 9700?)
RAID card with 2 * 80 Gig drives, 7200RPM (in 1990, bought a Fujitsu 180 Meg SCSI for $905, for A2000)
19" monitor (probably viewsonic)
56* CD-R
48-12-40 CD-RW
DVD-Rom
750 Meg Zip drive (hope I could boot off of it :-D )
Catweasel???? (drivers?)
CF reader on USB (booting off of THAT, would be COOL!!!!!)
DESKTOP case (why do people put $3000+ in something that could fall over????)
AmigaOne! RAID, hehe, boot under 5 seconds, hehe!

The market of graphics cards is very fast and high end models become mid range in a few months... there's little point in paying lots of bucks for a card with no support that will cost half the price in 9 months. I would choose the card with best support instead of buying one that is not supported. For example I wouldn't buy a Radeon9700 when there's no 3D support for slower radeons.
I would stick with my Voodoo3 (which has 3D acceleration) until stable 3D drivers for Radeon see the light.
But I agree with you in your main point, getting a good card will help a lot to improve performance.

Y'can. U-Boot allows this. (I think this was mentioned when they first did it, when it was still called PPCBoot.)
I definitely remember either Ben or Hans-Joerg saying the A1 would boot off USB Pen drives.
:-D

I've ordered an AmigaONE XE G4 800 under the earlybird deal.
It will have:
* 512Mb RAM
* Radeon 7500 64Mb (i'm no gamer, so i went for the budget option)
* A really cool black and silver case, with a really cool black and silver cordless keyboard, and a dark blue and silver Logitech optical wheelmouse
* 30Gb HD (with around 40Gb available from other machines over my LAN)
* Crappy 15" monitor until OS4 is out, when that will be swapped for my Amiga 4000s really nice 19" monitor

A Pegasos with 128 Megs SDRAM (I didn't want to buy a larger, more expensive one unless I know it works or not), a 80Gb HDD and an ATI Radeon 8500LE 128 Mb.
Feels comfy. (Even with the only 128 megs ram) Yet, I have little experience with tho :-)
-
Hello iamaboringperson,
(Is that CZJ as avatar??)
I've got my Peg1, 512 MB, 40GB, ATI9000 64 MB, etc. at home.
Ofcourse I don't know what to do with the surplus of RAM :-D, but it's fun to have it.

I would say that 128MB would be quite enough for most average users. When I bought my pegasos I was kind of used to the Wintel situation (WinXP will hardly boot with less than 256MB, and becomes confortable only at 512MB), so I thought I would go for 256MB. Unfortunately there were some problems in finding 256MB memory modules that would work (Gunne at GGS data did some testing), so I went for a 512MB Samsung registered module. And man, was that an overkill in an "Amiga" envireonment? :-) Well, at least I have a *huge* RAM: drive! :-D
-
Hi Folks,
Here's my list:
A1G4-XE
256MB Ram (maybe more, dunno yet)
60GB HDD (IDE)
Radeon 9000 128MB (or if it doesn't work a Voodoo 3 3000)
Existing 17" Elonex crappy monitor
Black/Grey case, (can remove side panel and motherboard comes out freely, as long as your cables are long enough that is :-) )
DVD-ROM
CD-RW 40-12-48 (I think)
Both optical drives have white fronts (looks really crap at the mo, N E 1 got any black spray paint!!)
Think that's about it for the time being. oh yeah, will need a modem. (I've got one that works on my linux box at home,
but the drivers will need to be recompiled and even then it might not work, I'll buy an external one, no broadband in these parts :-x )
Cheers,
Graham C

Apple are wise not to release the specs with all the GHz-fans around. Any btw, an Apple is not really superior to an A1 or Pegasos - maybe Apple get the first pick of the PPCs, but there's not much else better... :-)

I think whabang meant more like "technical documentation needed for porting an OS". But can Linux run on it, so can AmigaOS/MorphOS, right?

I wouldn't say that. Have a look at: http://www.apple.com/powermac/ (http://www.apple.com/powermac/)
On that page you can see the following specifications: The powermac comes with either dual G4 @ 1.25GHz or dual G4 @ 1.42GHz. It has better memory bandwith than the Articia, up to 2 GB of high-speed DDR SDRAM can be used. It has one FireWire 800 port, two FireWire 400 ports. It also has Gigabit ethernet. Finally, it has AGP 4x.
You can also read: "What’s more, FireWire, PCI expansion and Gigabit Ethernet are integrated directly into the main system controller, reducing latencies and providing superior I/O performance."
Looking at the specs, I would say that Apple is pretty much superiour to both the A1 and the Pegasos1. It is *a lot* more expensive too, of course! ;-)
-
my ideal A1 system would be:
At least 800MHz G4
512Mb Ram
80Gb Hard Drive
Best ATI GFX card that OS4 supports
CD-RW drive (maybe DVD-RW if and software turns up for one!)
Best Creative Sound card that OS4 supports (pref 5.1+)
If I think of anything else I'll add it!
Not that I can get this system till end of the year, but what the hay, fun to imagine! :-)

@Atheist
DESKTOP case (why do people put $3000+ in something that could fall over????)
I agree! Also I think that a DT case looks more, well, Amiga like!
-
Hello Agafaster,
Just IMAGINE the looks on their faces when they/you see an AmigaOne boot off of a 16 Meg Compact Flash card with NO CD-Rom or Harddrive!!!!!! :-D * 16,000,000
It could feed off of the ethernet port from the WWW!
I gotta quit giving these ideas away!
AmigaOne! ......Priceless!!!
-
hmm, i think i want to go for an amigaOne for now, but im still not sure
what ever i get, ill pack it with as much ram as i can get
and i want all the best components
1,2, or 3(!!) Gfx-Cards with 3 X 21" Sony Trinitron monitors (i hope amigaos supports multiple monitors properly)
ill have a Seagate Cheatah X15(fastest HDD in the world! :D ) SCSI HDD as my primary HDD, and another >200G IDE HDD as another secondary HDD,
750Meg zip drive(or 250 meg internal, if 750 internal is not available)
absolutly NO Floppy drive!!
A Plextor Ultra Wide SCSI CD-drive(reader)
+DVD &CD/r/rw reader/writer(s)
i have no idea what mouse(any seggestions?)
and mabee a 'happy-hacking' keyboard if nobody produces an amiga style keyboard...
ill have virtually all black stuff(case etc...)
and the case will be steel(not sure which brand yet...)
+ ill have a UPS
im going for somthing that will impress...
oh and ill buy a new laser printer soon too! my current one is waaay too old :D
:)

Hello Spidey,
(Is that CZJ as avatar??)
yup! youre right! :-D
itl pro'lly change soon though...
Ofcourse I don't know what to do with the surplus of RAM , but it's fun to have it.
theres nothing wrong with having more than what you can use... its sure better than not having enough, eh?
