Title: Midnight Mystique
Post by: blobrana on May 28, 2005, 04:52:12 PM
Hum,
If Darth Vader went to the Chelsea flower show he may be pleasantly surprised to see the very first black hyacinth on show….

The new plant, christened Midnight Mystique, marks the finding of one of horticulture's remaining holy grails, (though, out-romanced in most growers’ minds only by the elusive blue rose).

Michael Perry, of Thompson and Morgan, the Suffolk plant specialist which has produced rarities since 1855, said: "It is the first time a black hyacinth has ever been available commercially and the flower world is very, very excited about it."

I wonder if TBL will use a picture of these in any future productions? :-D

As with all so-called 'black' sports, it's actually a very dark blue. Any 'black' flower is surely an anathema to natural law. I personally find 'black' flowers awful, but they do represent a Hell of a lot of time and effort by plant breeders wishing to 'defy' Mother Nature.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is TBL?

@Jax

True, even the picture looks very deep blue/black (at least to me). That said, provided it is pretty in UV light, a flower could be as black to the human eye as soot yet bees will still see it just fine.

@X-Ray

TBL is the abbreviation for "The Black Lotus", a demo group who regularly produce mircales out of 680x0 based amigas.

If you haven't seen any of their work (or any of the other many demo groups) running, you have missed out! Check out the amiga demo scene archives (http://ada.planet-d.net/) :-)

The pic looks more like purple to me than black.

Hum,
The photograph records the ultraviolet light. something our eyes don’t see.
(ie blue bells turn out magenta in photos)

< Doh!, as had already been pointed out >

"That's right, Dougal. You see, ordinary shops sell what look like black socks, but if you look closely, you'll see that they're very, very, very, very, very, very, very dark blue...." - Father Ted

:roflmao:

"It's perfectly simple, Dougal. Those tiny cows out there are just very far away."

Or something like that ;-)
