Title: Tribble Trouble...or more importantly, NO trouble.
Post by: edgar on May 28, 2005, 01:44:37 AM
Here's something for you all to mull over...

How come, I experienced Tribbles when I played Elite on the C64 (in 1985) but years later ('89 I think ?) when I played it  on my A500, the Tribbles never showed up anywhere.  Admittedly it DID make me play Elite much much more.  But I never saw any  Amiga-incarnations of those lovable little characters.

Any ideas where they went?  -  Maybe they weren't cool enough for the coolest 'puter of the time...maybe they were busy rehearsing another Star Trek script !

Answers in the usual (suspect) fashion, please.

 :-)

maybe it was a copyright issue?  When the first one came out they got slaped by Big Brother Gene so when the Amiga ver. hit the market, they were cut from the game.

My 2 Cents...

D'Oh! Thargoids ofcourse. I wonder how the hell something from a thing called Tomorrow People, which I've never heard of, has nested itself in my memories...

What good will that do. He/she will do nothing more but prescribe a lobotomy.

Hum,
A quick search in google reveals that Space Trader v1.2.0 (which is Elite on a PDA) has tribbles.
'Tribbles' is actually taken from a Star Trek episode named 'The trouble with Tribbles'. The script was from David Gerrold who also wrote the fantastic 'Harlie' series. In the old 'Elite' game, Tribbles caused a lot of havoc by cluttering up your HUD etc. In Space Trader, if you get stuck with tribbles and need them to increase, buy food. To kill them (but not all, although an Alien trader may buy all of them from you), carry NARCOTICS (i think...). Dead tribbles turn into FUR which can be sold at most places. Only prob is you'll get in trouble with the Law.

Well, I seem to remember that the only way to kill ALL the Tribbles in one go, was to fly very close to a sun, watching your cabin temperature. When the temp hit a certain level you could hear a strange noise which apparently was the sound of Tribbles dying.

Did end up with a lot of Fur.

Wow, interesting pointers there edgar and blob. Anyway how you can encounter those Tribbles in Elite(C64)? Im curious! Cause All I can remember was saving a young Prince from a certain planet. Never got to save him but manages to ride with me on my ship and All the pirate vessels are after me! :-(

As I remember, you happened upon a spacecraft drifting in space (as it does...) and after helping the hapless occupant (I can't remember how ?), he pays you with a "priceless" item.  When you then check your cargo you find nothing has changed, and feel you've been swindled. Anyway, after a while, maybe half to one hour of gameplay, the Tribbles start making little squeaky noises and eventually drift across your HUD, blocking all the important data like your navscreen.

How did the C64 have Tribbles. Apparently they were a product of the C64's sprite handling abilities, and each Tribble (of which you could end up with countless) was a sprite. which could be animated and could drift aimlessly across your screen, usually at the most inoportune times!

They started out as good fun, but eventually pissed you off.
