Title: A1200 Kb green ribbon-cable detached HELP
Post by: xaccrocheur on March 10, 2003, 02:30:04 PM
To clean this old 1200 I had to separate the parts.

But the keyboard slipped from the place where I tried to secure it, and the green ribbon-cable connecting it to the MoBo detached itself from its white plastic connector on the MoBo.

I managed to put it back in place, but it seems that it would require some tool that I don't have. I mean it was "plugged" deeper thazn what I can replace it, I dont want to use too much force 8-)

I'd post photos, but the batteries are dead  :-(
I will soon.

Anyway, only this cable links the KB to the amiga, so my questions are :*

# Is this cable meant to be detached and put back in place ?
# By what means ? Dataching the white plastic plug from the mobo ? Or rather pull the cable from the keyboard ?

# Is this part replacable ? Or can I, using a proper technique , replace this ribbon cable in its white plastic housing ?

Thank you.

Dont panic, its allright for this cable to come detached, ive done it a thousand times.

All you have got to do is pull the whie clip up all the way and then just push the ribbon cable back in the slot and then push the clip back down.  its a bit fiddly but not hard.  you dont need any specail tools or anything

If you have the white plastic clip still push it back over the green ribbon. You will notice that the slot has a piece of white plastic underneat. This goes behind the ribbon (Black exposed copper edge at the top). Slide it about half way up the ribbon. Put the ribbon in the connector with the exposed copper touching the pins in the connector on the the mobo.
Slide down the wlip plastic clip into the connector.
If you have broken a clip of dont worry it shouldn't come loose.

If you have damaged the exposed copper you can use some electro paint on the edges to make good contact again.

If you have damaged the ribbon completely.

Slice 5mm of the bottom. Peal back the green fablon over the copper tracks. With a knife gently scrape of the green paint. Then add elctro paint up about 8mm each track.

If the white plastic clip is broke you can hold it in place with thin card. (Fag packet thickness)

WOW, this is some HWare hacking :)

Thank you for the replies.

It is now clear that I have to gently tear off the white plastic from the Mobo, then place the ribbon cable init, and replace the whole assemblage.

The cable itself looks perfectly good, witch is very good because electro paint is not in store here (good name, sounds like a technoid demo-party name:)

The cool thing is that I now can clean up the parts separately. if you'd see this you'd hit me with the thing right away  :-D

Oh, any advice and pitfalls about CLEANING up a 1200 on witch a cow ####ted ? Nah, kidding, but its VERY dirty, and rusty, and I did'nt know that A1200 HD's were so tiny!
No wonder the prices of those at the time...
So hey, if someone setup a website as good as this one on the 4K (http://wonkity.com/~wblock/a4000hard/main.html), only about the 1200, please post the link.

Thank you !

BTW I found this, quite fun 2 read :

Cleaning Beer Spill from an A500 - A600 - A1200 (http://www.gurumeditation.net/amiga/optimize/beerspill_a5612.html)

... And useful. I mean, who did not spill the horror across his A500 KB ? Please stand up , please stand up :-P

Didya notice the color of what I'm drinking ? This used to look like coke (when it was in fact not:) but now it's guiness.

You cannot get boinged like this on coca-cola, for sure. I'm only drinking coke when I'm *very* ill, it acts somehow as a medicine on me (and taste like it too)

I once managed to spill a bowl of rice crispies and milk over a desktop A1200! The bowl landed upside down on the case, right over the cooling slots :-o
Luckily the power was off at the time. I had to completely strip it down and painstakingly clean up the sugary milk residues that had found their way round every component on the motherboard! I had to wash the case itself!
I then let the thing dry out for 2 days.

Amazingly, it all worked afterward :-D

You don't have to rip anything off your motherboard. You have taken the wrong end of the stick, unfortunately. :-o

If the cable is not damaged then all you have to do is slot it back in.

White connector

The white connector has two tiny white tabs inside it on each side.

When you pull them up slightly they allow the ribbon cable to slot in easily. Afterwards just push them down again for a tight fit.

I hope that dodgy diagram clarifies my point  :-)

HAHAHAha, About 10 years ago I managed to drop a mug of hot chocolate all over my A1200, the poor thing was switched on at the time, and it immediately crashed.

More than a Little distessed, I quickly made myself another chocolate and tentively turned the A1200 back on.
It took about half an hour to make another Hot chocolate, and when I powered the miggy up, she worked no problems.

I totally forgot about this even until three months ago, when I bought a brand new A1200 desktop case, and upon opening the A1200 I found the whole motherobard covered in a hard black coating, not only that, the motherboad was stuck to the lower half of the case... The stench was foul!!! I can't beleivethe thing worked for 10 years with all this stuff in there...

It just goes to show, they don't make 'em like they used to!! I've kill a few PC's by sneezing on them...

Don´t tear anything off!

I had problems with the keyboardribboncable when i installed my accelerator.
Just pull up the tabbed bit of the connector, stick the ribbon in and push the connector back down.
It didn´t worked for me the first time but when i tied again i moved the ribboncable as far left in the connector it could go then it worked.
So if it doesn´t work try to move the cable around in the connector before you take it apart
