Title: Overclocking Bppc 040????
Post by: Peter_s on May 16, 2005, 12:53:16 PM
Hey guys,

I'm after a little bit of advice on overclocking my BPPC 040. its running at 160mhz (or there about) but I find it lags abit on Heretic2 and afew other PPC games.  So I did a search on overclocking this card and came across this site Overclock place (http://xoomer.virgilio.it/giorsign/overclock.html) and im plannig on using the The multiplier way to try and speed this board up abit, but my problem is I dont know what speed I can take it upto safely

Quote
I didn't look at 160 and 175 ones, but I believe that nothing changes

So if anyone has done this or has an idea please let me know or if you had any problems with your card afterwards.

Thanks in advance guys :-)

The 160 MHz PPC should run with 200 Mhz without problems.

Thanks DJBase:-)  thats the number I was hoping for, I'm not wanting to max the board out. But just take the edge of afew PPC games.

I know about a 160 Mhz meing overclocked to 225 Mhz with extra cooling, tested for at least four hours 100% processor load without a single problem  :-o

bit off topic but i have CSPPC with an overclocked 060 it runs on 60 Mhz, 66Mhz was  not possible the scsi bus hangs.
But runs great on 60 Mhz :-D

Any know what about clocking 040? its safe to clock 040/25 to 40mhz? My 25 is colcked to 33mhz and works great..on cpu I have good cooling system!

VooDoo : from 25 to 33 is already a big step. It might work on 40 Mhz but you could also burn it

i was have 040 on 40mhz, and ppc on 266mhz. It was work fine.
Today i have 060 in this board on 66mhz, + ppc with 266mhz. work stable, without any glitches.

hmm..cool 040/40mhz..How much mips do you have whit this clocked 040??

And for clock 040/25 to 40mhz I need 80mhz crystal?

2voodoo
yes, for 040-33mhz - 66mhz oscil, for 040-40mhz - 80mhz oscil. I do not have any modules/tests with my old 040-40mhz cpu, only with 040-33, if you want i can send it to you. Speed of all transfers betwin 040-25 and 040-33 REALLY extreme. Only 8mhz, but it is very nice for work. 40mhz of course good too.
Now i have (as i said bellow) 060-66 on my bppc, so, can't do it any tests about 040-40. sorry.

anyway, i want to say, that i do not used any cooler for my speedup cpu (33mhz), but cpu was very hot (but work stable). For 40mhz i used cooler (but without cooler it work nice too)

hmm..thx for the great story..now I need  80mhz oscil. and my 040 will by 40mhz :)..

Yeah true 25 to 33mhz is xtreme speed!!

Well I finally dug the BPPC 040 out the loft to overclock it, And noticed the way my resistors are set out
(http://www.mods4us.com/forums/4images/data/media/40/codes.gif)
And i noticed that if i did the 3.5x, then I'd only have to move the one resistor but that would make the card 231mhz so would that be too much for this card to cope with.  I do have a spare cooling fan I can add.  But wanted to check with you's guys first to see what ya think? or should I just used the 3x config to be on the safe side.

Update:
-------
Well i overclocked the card to 200mhz and added an extra fan and its worked perfect, I've had no problems atall in the last 24 odd hours, except from one that nigling little curious voice that wonders about,if It could cope with being overclocked to the 231mhz??  I know its a case of flipping a coin but what do you guys think.

a) slight chance it will work!
b) should work!
c) Get ready for a BANG!!!!!!

Thanks in advance for any advice. :-)

my worked at 225mhz so try!

it died, but not because of overclocking.

the card i had was problematic even at 175MHz...

...at 225 MHz it didn`t make no new problems, so...

...it should work for you.

thank you, i think out of interest I'll overclock it up again and if its dies , I always have my BPPC 060 to use. but if it doesnt die then its just a case of seeing how long it will lives for :-) and if its dies ,then I've just pushed the value of the rest of the BPPC cards up abit lol

PPC@272mhz

PROBLEMS: im having problems with the clockport on the a1200..PRELUDE soundcard locks-up system under PPC games..
works fine on 68k games..

RAM SETTING: all set to pre-charged off..

Well I overclocked the card upto 233mhz, but I guess it was just to much for the card to handle.  The card seemed to work fine and with ppctool it was register as 233mhz but the only draw back was it refused to play heretic2 and payback the games would start to load and then just freeze. So I removed the card and put it back to the 200mhz and all the games work now. so i guess 233mhz is too much :-(
