Question: Who develops betterAmiga tools/utils? AmigaInc or thirdparty bedroom coders? :-D

(Any comments on my signature?)

Birdie v1.5 (never get to work Birdie 2000!)

No, I can run it and see it's superb "About" window, but it refuse to load any of the textures
I use with Birdie 1.5. :-?

I tryied all (???) possible configurations, started it from different places, ect... I never
succeded :-(

So return to v1.5 that works for me since several years now without problems :-)

AFAIK, it's a lib that manages MMU functions.
Never used it as I don't have an MMU... :-)

Hi All

I do have an 040 overclocked to 33 Mhz. voodoo 3 3000, ppc and all the ####s working on my 1200.
Is there a patch to speedup the 040 a little more?

In no particular order:

1. DOpus 4 (although i wish they'd fix ConfigOpus)
2. MagicMenu
3. Birdie, VisualPrefs & TitleShadow (same choice because they're all just for sprucing up WB)
4. Blacks Editor 1.0 (the updates are unstable)
5. AssignZ

... 5 is not enough ...

6. Env-handler
7. KingCON
8. MiamiDx (hopefully replaced with RoadShow soon)
9. WHDLoad
10. MUI
11. SnoopDOS

I would include things like "YAM" and "IBrowse" but I consider them applications, rather than utilities.

Yeah, its called a 68060  :-D

But 040 speed won't matter if and when OS4 for the Blizzard PPC arrives.

Yep

My ppc is a 266 one.

I hope *whenever* we will be able to run OS4 on the Blizzard PPC

FSMathlibs?

What´s that?

I have heard that Oxypatcher is not efficient on 040, only in 060 boards.

Tell me!

3) HSMathLibs
4) DiskMaster
5) PFS3

I *used* to use oxypatcher, but MuRedox is faster, and if you're using MMULib then you should be using that ;-)

My top hacks, i mean patches -
1. BlizKick
2. Visual Prefs
3. Birdie
4. MCP - though it's got enough problems :-(
5. xadmaster

And Utilities -
1. DOpus Magellan
2. Tinymeter (my custom hacked one which shows P96 ram)
3. MiamiDX
4. rc-ftpd (well, I would say that)
5. AmiIRC

@lo :

>mmu.library? Its the only one I haven't heard of, whats it do?

R : Great tool for general AmigaOS stabilization and unifying 68020/30 (68881/2) and 040/060 MMU usage.

- Will contribute to less memory use and  fragmentation,
- comes with 68020 /030 /040 /060 very efficient and SMALL libraries, (68060.library is 100KB smaller than Phase5 / DCE ones!)
- install a new resource called "fpsp.resource" used by the v45 math libraries to speed up non implemented FPU instructions in the 040 / 060 FPUs,
- thus NO NEED for oxypatcher, Phase5 CyberPatcher, ect...  anymore,
- comes with replacement for well known (and usefull) debugging tools : enforcer, guardian angel, mmu scan, ect...
- provide standard interfaces to MMU and virtual memory handling (memory.library),
- provide a standard debug library (disassembler.library)...
- and some other goodies :-)

For more infos RTFM :-D

Jean-François.

Wow, I guess I'm just unlucky. Installation of the mmu.library on my BlizzPPC system totally screwed everything up. Datatypes died, cybergfx stopped working etc :-(

@DeQuevedo

Oxypatcher is not a program to make your CPU go _faster_.
It's a program that handles some of the shortcomings of nonexistant 68060 support in AmigaOS.

Most Amiga software wasn't written with the 060 in mind, so it uses instructions not available in the 060 (the instruction set in the 060 was reduced, it's sort of semi-RISC).
These instructions needs to be emulated and oxypatcher handles this. Software for this is of course included when you buy an 060 card but Oxypatcher is said to be more efficient.

There's no software that makes your CPU go faster :-)

Have you allready tried watercooling.....

 8-)  8-)  8-)

I'm also thinking of overclocking to 33 MHz. Must work with a good cooler placed on the CPU

@ Karlos :

Did you install it by hands :-?

Normally, the provided installer makes a pretty good job.
But (rare) sometimes it can require some fine tuning ;-)

BTW can you mail me your actual startup-sequence, user-startup, wbstartup drawer contents, and versions of OS/patches you use?

Amigalement,

Jean-François.

yes I know ... this topic is dug up real deep.

But I came across this one after one of our Belgian Amiga Club members dug up his Amiga after many years stating " Are there new patches ? ... I have forgotten so much " ...

So yes ... what did change or what did we forget ? So state those 5 utils/patches again that made that miggy special, because some of us just forgot it.

I used a lot more than five back in the day. Honestly I think that number ranged in the dozens. ;) These days I think I use a lot fewer than that thanks to OS3.9 + BB1-4. Although the argument could be made that the Boing Bags are nothing more than a collection of patches, too. ;)

Here's a few to add to your list off my A2000, however:

- PFS file system
- Updated libraries thanks to Cosmos, Peter K., THOR, etc. (exec, intuition, graphics, layers, math, icons, etc.)
- TLSFMem
- Visual Prefs (had to remove Birdie since it crashed with the updated libs)
- Env-Handler
- FPPrefs and the Rebel palette (if not using high-color screen modes, see mfilos's great blog entry on setting this up)
- Freewheel and the Cocolino driver with modern mice
- Multi_CX
- DirWork
- MagicMenu
- WHDLoad

Honestly I'm surprised I don't have more, those updated libraries really made a lot of other things unnecessary. I should start looking into how to burn my own ROM's, lol. ;)

Also one other tip that maybe some folks don't know about, even if you have 3.9 + all four of the Boing Bags there are still updates out there. Just put the name of every program into the Aminet search and you'll find that a few have been updated beyond what was distributed at the time. Just my .02 cents. Have fun, many patches can make for a frustrating, unstable experience. Or a great one!

Didn't it have problems on 3.9? I did use it earlier on 2.1/3.1.
