Title: New to the forums and have removed the dust from my Amiga...(pics inside)
Post by: dawiper on April 14, 2005, 10:56:16 PM
Hi!

Have been reading these forums for a month now, and thought it was time to reg.
I started playing with my good old amiga a couple of months ago.
I've spent alot of time getting it "up to date". I have: C= A1200+Apollo030/40+32 mb EDO+powerflyer. I've also bought ks3.1.
It took quite a while to remeber everything. But now most of it is back. My main reason for powering up my good old amiga is to be able to play games (I'm fed up with the 3d-stuff) and to make backups of alot of stuff i had on floppies.

I always wanted a tower for my amiga, and here it is:

First I needed a external keyboard... With the help of aminet and a old A500 I made this:

And from the back:

Now I had to figure out a way to get around the PCMCIA slot problem. Sollution: Make a adapter myself. Slot from a old laptop:

Soldered directly to the motherboard. I'm not sure if I have the patience to do that again.

Next thing is to get it all in a case. A old atx tower is always nice...
Lots and lots of hours later:

And with the sides and top on:

I know. That paintjob was rushed to much. I will redo it some other day.

And on my desk running. (I just had to add a couple of cold cathodes):

(My hands where shaking...)
Thats it!

Me and my Amiga is joined togheter after a several years long seperation. I must say its good to have her back... :-)

Wow! You wired up a PCMCIA adaptor by hand? That's very impressive. Those skills will be very useful in the future, I'm sure!

Well it's not that hard. Patience, a fine point soldering iron and some hours to spare is all thats needed.

Upgraded from wb3.0 to os3.9, and I must say it was worth it. :-o

Welcome to A.org! Always nice to see "dusties" return. Hope you'll stay around for a while. :)

I personaly don't like towered A1200 as no matter what you doo to them they always end up having too many "custom solusions" too them that's not all that fun to failcheck later on. It's either standard A1200 case or bigbox Amiga for me. That said the tower looks reasonable tidy atm. For color I'm not sure about the blue, I'm more to black and silver... but that's just me. The lightings are cool... I trowed in a glowwhire in my customized A1200 and it can just say it makes a big difference.

You are right!!! Changing motherboard would be a pain, would have to redo the pcmcia stuff. And I'm not able to put a mediator in there either. Else than that It should be able to take some various expansions if needed.
About the color. Originally I wanted it to be darker blue... Couldn't find it at the time.

I'd like more detailed info.  This is too good to be so vague.

How did you handle the keyboard connections?  That's the only thing stopping me.

The keyboard is a A500 that i chopped the rear off. The 500 keyboard is similar to the a1200 keyboard, but the A1200 keyboard has it's controller on the motherboard.

I found the connector pinouts for the a500 keyboardplate at Big Book of Amiga Hardware(keyboards & adapters/A500 keyboard).

-Connected 5v+gnd from the floppy connector.
-Soldered "keyboard-data/clock" to that CIA chip(U7).
-Then I added the reset wire to U4.
-I also had to bring the KeyboardMPU(U13) offline by cutting two pins.

I used some german "tower-guide" from Aminet as a guide for this part.
There are several guides on aminet that describes how to connect a external amiga keyboard.

Did it help any?
