Here is another interesting techincal tidbit to come off the wires (in case you haven't seen it yet). Sony seems to be some inventing fools.Link (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&ncid=738&e=7&u=/nm/20050406/tc_nm/tech_sony_brain_dc)
The technique could one day be used to create videogames in which you can smell, taste, and touch, or to help people who are blind or deaf.
What kind of API would you use to manipulate smell or taste?
The U.S. patent, granted to Sony researcher Thomas Dawson, describes a technique for aiming ultrasonic pulses at specific areas of the brain to induce "sensory experiences" such as smells, sounds and images.
The Matrix has you. ;-)
It will be interesting to see what comes of this.

The strange thing is that they have patented something that does not exist (yet):
"A Sony Electronics spokeswoman told the magazine that no experiments had been conducted, and that the patent "was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."
So what stops me from patenting a timemachine based only on theoretical possible thoughts ??

Idiocy
Things that affects the brain may be able to do serious damage.
I don't want it.

True, but stuff like this is what makes for great novels and I can't help it may eventually be a boon for blind and deaf people.
It's fun to imagine.

I think I'll patent
trans-warp drive

Don't forget your quantum torpedoes. ;-)

Probably something like an audio API.
Mind you, I wouldn't want to be within 10 feet when it crashes. I already have a family of skunks in my back yard.
Makes you wonder what kind of batteries you'd need for that, too. My dad told me a story once about a pickle truck that overturned. I can only imagine an accident with a truck carrying a load of Olfactory Power Units. :-)

I'm sure you'll feel better after watching a re-run of Total Recall.
Hey, if something screws up, there's always damage control. :-)

pfft!
Hey, I know, let's all read a few pulp sci-fi novels and patent everything we see in there.
I'm off to "experience" putting my head in the microwave.
