Title: Where can I get a replacement IC socket for my A2000?
Post by: cuyax on April 05, 2005, 07:56:24 PM
I have battery corroded socket that needs to be replaced for the 68000 CPU.  Where can I get one of these?  I live in Dallas, TX.  Online or local?

Also, what is the spacing of this 64 - pin IC socket?

I think you guys have a place called Radio Shack, would be a place to start.

Other than that, most professional electronics suppliers like Farnell and Radio Spares, who are worldwide.

If you can't find the exact size socket for the 68000, you can buy these "do it yourself" IC sockets which is basically a long continuous single plastic strip of pin sockets.  Just cut off a couple of 32 pin lengths, and you're in buisness.
Try and get the machine pin contacts as oposed to the original dual wipe style contact.

The DIY socket strip is usually machine pin anyway.

Don't try using a 2nd hand/used socket, more trouble and effort than it's worth.

Excellent!  Thanks for the info.  I did not even think about the strip style sockets.  I have not been successful finding a 64-pin IC block and I did not know the pin spacing or the width for internet order.

I will go see if Radio Shack has the strips and I will break it down to 32 pins.

There is a store for anyone in Dallas call Tanner Electronics that has alot of this type of stuff.  I called them and they said they did not have 64 pin DIP IC sockets.

Thanks again. :-)

The pin spacing should be standard 2.54mm, the same as most other DIP packages.
Not sure about the width, but it's wider than normal.
I'm sure you know how to work calipers or a ruler :-P

You could try Digikey. They've got an extensive web site.

You could also get a couple of shorter wide sockets and use them together.

Thanks.  Found one at Fry's Electronics.  It was the last one.  I replaced it and the battery and it still won't boot.  I wanted to get it running for selling the whole system on eBay.
I will be posting it later today if anyone is interested.

Thanks again for everyone's help. :-D

You are going to sell a dead A2000 on eBay?  You might as well keep it or give it away for parts than trying to get a few bucks out of it.  Not worth it IMHO.  You gotta love eBay...  Simply amazing  *sigh*
