Here's your last warning folks. On Thursday, everyone's password will be reset. Those without proper addresses will be out of luck. I cannot and will not manually reset 1000+ passwords because you're either too forgetful or lazy to update your e-mail address.
Again, your e-mail address will not be available to anyone unles you choose that setting. Right now, a majority of you haven't bothered to update your address, and if that trend continues, your account will end up deleted.
Also, on Thursday, I plan to prune any accounts (and posts) from anyone who hasn't logged in in over a year.

Hm.. I wonder what this years april first wil be.. Related to this ?

Due to security and database integrity concerns, we intend to institute a password change across the board for every account on March 31st. After that point, your password will be reset and you will need to request a new one.
Point out to me where I said anything about April 1st?
I will say this. The thought processes of certain people around here have just been brought to light, and even though I am trying to make this security update as highly publicized and open as I can, if people refuse to comply, I *will* end up closing Amiga.org indefinitely, and that is no joke. The account security issue is not trivial, and if everyone's so completely against helping out in even the most simple of manners, I see no other choice.
On a seperate note,
A friend and I are working on about a half-dozen side-project sites as part of a new network of "theme sites". I am hoping that, with these sites, I can supplement my dwindled income.
I am not planning ANY changes to Amiga.org when those sites come to fruition, but even the mere thought of me opening up these additional sites appears to have some people frantic and screaming "the sky is falling" wherein Amiga.org is concerned. So, from my perspective, while I love this site and the community around it, Amiga.org has seemed to become my own personal albatross.

You didn't, and I didn't intend to make it sound the pruning and/or password change is the april fools joke.. Just wondering if you're planning another golden one like last year :-)

Hi Wayne
so in few words . . .everyone with a VALID e-mail address, its OK?

In fewer words, yes.
To date, fewer than 5% of you have updated your addresses. If no one is going to take this seriously, then there's no point.

Well, since amiga.org offers a notify option (thanks for that :-) ) it could be that a large amount of users have that turned on so their address is valid..
Right ?
-
Most people are notified by PM, not e-mail.
-
Wll, then I hope there aren't any more thinking like this (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14937)
:-(
-
I'm still using the same email address as when I joined, so no updating required for me :-)
I just can't understand how people have got the wrong idea about this :-?
-
I have always used my official email addy so I don´t think I have anything to fear
-
No updating needed here either :-D
-
The sky is falling!
No wait, it's just a brick.
*Klunk*
Prune away, maestro!

LET ME BE AS CLEAR AS I CAN, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO OBVIOUSLY CANNOT READ
(partially sarcastic)
1) On March 31, I will change EVERYONE's PASSWORD to a random one.
2) I will NOT send you (or the other 3700 people) individual e-mails telling you what the RANDOM password is.
3) If your e-mail address in your account is not updated prior to 3/31, you will not be able to request a new password from the system.
4) As a result, you will NOT be able to get back into Amiga.org, nor will you be able to open new, duplicate accounts -- which I will kill on sight. End of story.
5) I WILL NOT sit and manually reset passwords for those of you too lazy to update your damned e-mail address ahead of time.
Is that clear enough?
-
Very clear, lets just hope the idiots can read ;-)
-edit-
I just read the "Ok. I know for a fact that you people don't actually know how to "read"" comment by Wayne in leander's thread :-D
-
Did i miss a thread that said "we're not bothering with this password resetting lark after all"?
-
Yes. Yes you did.
-
Am I understanding this correctly.. that as long as I have a valid email adress it's all good or do I need to do something else like put "Receive occasional email notices
from administrators and moderators" on or change "Notification Method: When you monitor e.g. a forum, how would you like to receive notifications of updates" to email?
I dont get this "update" thing since I've used a single valid emailadress all the time so how do I "update" it?
-
Well, maybe up to date would be a better way to phrase it.
-
I haven't changed my e-mail in more than four years. Am I to believe that is some kind of record? :-)
-
Nope, I've had mine for oh....at least 7 but probably 8 years.
