Title: Renewing membership
Post by: the_leander on March 27, 2005, 02:43:43 PM
On the 31st of this month, Wayne will we know be sending out new random passwords for us all. I have decided not to bother updating after this. Wayne is determined to break down this one of a kind site, fairy snuff, thats his choice and right. Likewise, its my right not to like that change. Since in order to get the same quality (in theory) service over two sites where one used to do, I won't bother. You guys have been great trully, and I thank Wayne for building this place. I thank all the folks here for putting up with my insubstancial rants from time to time and for providing me with more comedy moments than I can remember.

But I feel its time to move on and this password update provides me with a clean break to do so. Take care guys, I'll miss you all.

Such pessimism is bad for you, dude.

Wait and see, is all I would suggest.

Don't forget to drop by in the channel, or will you continue to be part of the furniture there? :-).

I'll still be part of the furnature odin :-)

Besides, what better use of a new ADSL line then sitting in an IRC channel ;-)

With so many core members venting their desire to part with this site, I fear the nasty stench of death may soon be upon us all :-(

Me? Core member? bwhahahahaha

No seriously.

I like this site because it has a little bit of everything, a bit of politics, a bit of religion, and enough computery stuff to keep my inner geek happy. A radical shift in this sites ballance or spliting it up into seperate bits to me is a waste of time from my perspective. I stated as much when Wayne put the feelers out on this idea in the beginning. I understand that nothing lasts forever. But to break this place up destroys what kept me comming back.

To quote GadgetMaster in another place:

Amiga.org wasn't the perfect Amiga site, nor the perfect political site, but it was the perfect site for Amigans.

That sums up my feelings far more eloquently then I ever could.

Take care man, I've come to appreciate your insightful viewpoints over the past few years. Good luck to you and cheers :pint:

@ -D-

I genuinely don't think I am worthy of such praise, but thankyou :-)

@ gizz72

You've been a good laugh yourself, indeed I've enjoyed having such a different perspective on things from my own, and for proving that my predudices were just that on several issues. :-)

Nah..you`re getting it confused with Bloodline`s sock, apparently they smell pretty similar.

Oh well, that`s another thread buggered.

Whats the big deal about passwords resetting?  I fail to
see the dilemia here.  Just update your email address and
all is fine.

@billchase

It isn't the password resetting that is the issue. I believe it was just chosen as a natural opportunity to leave by simply not renewing and hence fading out of existance after the reset.

It seems to me that the real reason for leaving is based on a misunderstanding regarding where the site goes from here, in the general sense. Wayne appears to have made it clear in the new reminder thread that he isn't about to radically change the place any time soon.

I'd hope that nobody leaves based on a misunderstanding.

/me makes enormous hint guestures towards the_leander :-)

Leander,

I think you have misunderstood what is about to occur in a few days.  Wayne is NOT CHANGING THE SITE.  All he is asking people to do is (before March 31) verify that their email listed in their profile is correct.  Anyone can do this via the edit profile menu option.  PLEASE READ THE ANNOUNCEMENT.

As for your leaving, I personaly would hate to see you leave as I enjoy your posts but if the time has come, I wish you the best.

Regards,
ltstanfo

@ltstanfo

Oh, I thought all passwords were going to be reset and that those of us remaining (ie with valid email addresses) needed to request a new one via the forgotten password trick?

@Itstanfo

I read the announcement, but as Karlos stated earlier, I picked this time simply because it was convenient, I was (emphesis past tense) under the impression given by wayne that he was planning on breaking up amiga.org into an amiga only centric site (or indeed, letting it go the way of the old AWD) and a seperate coffeehouse site.

Nowhere in the announcement re the password change was there any inplication of amiga.org's closure nor did I read into that such a thing.

Is it me, or did this thread just lose about 8 posts?

Bizzare. Our "mission critical" hosting server at work just rolled on it's back and croaked too.

I wonder what the third weird thing is? These random, unexpected and inexplicable things always come in threes.

(thinks: please God, let it be a pay rise)

It was maybe Wayne retracting a few posts... he's sounding really annoyed with the whole thing just now and maybe he's trying to calm down :-)

I can see his point, but this thread is just a bit of a big misunderstanding.  As so often happens here :-D

You are correct Karlos.  I should have been a little more detailed in my post.  Yes, by verifying that you have a valid email address for your account, you will be able to request your temp password to your email. When you get it, you can log in to AO and reset the password to whatever you want.  This is a simple way of "pruning" old (inactive) accounts and hopefully those individuals who have hacked with bogus accounts.  AO is just trying to "clean house".

ltstanfo
