Jeeeesus, ay christ!
Poor old fella...

Jesus Christ.....take a look at those SIMMs. Looks like they're actually rotting or something :-\.

One touch and it'll all collapse in a heap :-o

I once read that one way to clean up motherboards is to put them in a dish washer then let them dry out. Sounds completely mad but it apparantely works...
So that thing may actually be in a repairable state...
-
That's one machine in need of some TLC.
-
Actually that could fetch a lot of money as a prop for a science-fiction movie. I can see it now...the away team beams aboard the derelict freighter, the one that hasn't been seen for 400 years and has suddenly emerged from a wormhole, its distress signal still active...
Data leads the away team to the bridge and after wiping some dust off a semi-opaque green perspex lid, he remarks that he has found the ancient transmitter. He lifts the lid on the bridge console and there underneath you see that A4000 exactly as shown in the photographs.
Of course Data might say he could still get the missing logs off the computer because there has been no battery damage (in fact I suspect that would be a plot requirement) ;-)

Uhm...The Next Generation has been in the mothballs for years you know :-).

The TNG crew must have come out of a second wormhole then. Just as well, the dunces from 'Enterprise' wouldn't know what to do with that A4000 :-P
-
Most likely the Enterprise people would try to get the A4k working with bad acting and lame plotlines.

That's what I was thinking when TNG was mentioned :-P

That looks repairable. I've seen much worse rust on my beetle and we repaired that. A good cleanup and a new case lid and she'll look like nothing ever happened.
-
Yeah just use some wet and dry paper to get rid of that surface rust and some etch primer. Easy. Seriously, how would you treat rust like this on delicate metal?
-
Well, ofcourse this rusting is different from that found on a car.
First thing I would do is take the machine completly apart. Then you have 2 seperate problems.
The case which can be restored using sanding paper and zync spray or whatever it is called. First you sand off all the rust. Then you spray all the metal with the zync spray. It will get a grey coat. Then you have to put the case to gether. replace all the nails you removed and that sort of work.
As for the PCB that is the more serious problem. If it still operates it will be a cleaning job. We got special sprays at work. I have no idea what they are called but you spray the PCB with it causing it to foam.
Then you leave the sprayed PCB like that for awhile. After that you can use a brush and a piece of cloth to get rid of loosened dirt. (Make sure this is all ESD safe)
Inspect the cleaned PCB under a magnifying glass. When you see somthing suspicious and cannot see it clear using the magnifying glass use a microscope. The latter should not be needed I think. The A4000 has not that fine pitched components.
When you get a clearer view of the suspicious part of the PCB you can decide if you need to resolder.
When everything is nice and clean again you can resocket chips/simms if any and test the PCB.
After you find it works ok you put it back in the case.
Thats about how I would do it. Note: I'm not a professional hardware designer or tester. I'm an embedded softeware designer. When in testphase I assist collegues of mine finding problems in hardware. Thats how I gained some hardware knowlegde. My rust knowledge comes primairaly from my mexican build beetle that is the most rust happy car after the citroën 2cv :)

Has anyone looked at what is bid so far on this
A4000 ??
I put it on my watch list to see .........
It gown WAY WAY beyond what I would be willing
to chance on it :-D

232 USD + 15 USD shipping when inside the USA and still 16 hours to go. People, please take care for the payment because the seller prefers BidPay which means that you have to pay extra for it. I recently paid 70 USD with BidPay and got charged at least 5 USD for it, not really something that was mentionned in the auction discription :-o
