Ok, lets start this.
I recently got for a gift a TowerHawk tower for my A1200.
So, I unpacked my miggy, and started to set-up everything.
Everything was fine, i managed to set it up correctly, until the moment I decided to set up the hard drive.
It is an 8GB seagate HD from an xbox (unlocked) new and unused.
Ok, it is time for you to laugh :P
I tried to boot with os3.1, os 3.0, os.3.9 (emergency disk). None of the above would format the disk, no matter how many partitions i create! it just stops formatting at some point (none specific). The only time I managed to format the disk in 2 partitions (4GB each) was when i booted from the Install3.1 disk!!!. But then, when i boot with another disk (3.0, 3.1, 3.9) the hard drive had the labels (system and work) but did not open a window!!!! (LOL)
I have to note that in all the other versions (os3.0, 3.1, 3.9) I have Idefix installed (and registered).
My setup is: A1200, Blizzard 1240 (w fan cooler installed), 16 MB ram, Idefix97 4-way buffered ide interface, Hitachi CDROM, Seagate 8GB HD, Towerhawk tower.
It is strange enough to make me laugh!

Sounds like a handful.
So since you got an unlocked xbox drive, have you dont a TSOP flash? :-D
Thats what I did to my xbox, and it works fine. :-D
-
tsop flash?
-
What happened to the rest of the XboX?

Lol. This is not our topic but i can answer.
Xbox is running fine in its brand new 120GB seagate HD :-)
Any ideas on the problem ??? :-P
-
Don't those partitions need to be <= 2 GB?
-
The problem is:
Amigas are allergic to Micro$oft
For example try running Micro$oft Basic for Amiga on any Amiga.
The Amiga will immediately go into anaphalactic shock.
You were lucky that your A1200 did not vomit all over u!

I mentioned that before, it doesn't mater how many partitions i make. I even tried 1 gb partitions!!! (and i ended up with 8 HD icons on thw workbench :-P ). I just could not format any of them, and even if i did, in 3.1 or 3.9 i could not make these partitions to open a window!
BOING! :-P

His boot partition needs to be <4GB
His other partitions should be able to be any size at all
as long as he is using the latest FFS

WOW, he've got something here!
where can i find the latest ffs ?
Is it not he ffs on 3.1, 3.9 ?
EDIT:
If anybody is intrested here is a page with links

Perhaps it's just a dodgy harddisk? Tried another HD?
-
HDToolBox and scsi.device in AmigaOS 3.0 and 3.1 support HDs max 4GB.
-
If you have IdeFix97 installed with 3.9, you should have this line in SS:
C:IDEFix
C:SetPatch QUIET SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device"
etc.
and use SFS as filesystem
EDIT- ohh . .and check TWICE, the IdeFixPrefs. Set all the devices as AutoDetect and 4Way adapter as EB Standard

The situation is becoming pure comedy...
I installed ffs (the latest version) and the scsi update. I also used the format 64 program, still nothing!!!
:roflmao:
Framiga: where is IdeFix prefs? I cant find any icon or anything...
I think i forgot to mention that i use floppy to install everything as it is the system HD i want to setup :-P
I deleted the multiview program, the clock program and some other things (printer devices etc.) in order to fit all these updates and idefix in the boot disk (dont worry it is a copy disk) I also deleted the cros dos file system to free some KB in order to fit the FFS in the L: directory
I dont know whats wrong, i formated the disk in WinXP and it worked fine for a couple of days - I did this to test the disk before the amiga setup.
It is really crazy. Everything is ok. The cables are brand new, the 4way-ide is merely used, the mobo is 100% ok, idefix is installed and registered, scsi update is installed, FFS update is installed!!!
WTF is going on!!! :-o
Maybe i should buy a 3GB or 2GB hd and forget about it ...

I remember I had this problem once with a 2 GB harddisk.
Formatting would stop at a certain point.
I seem to recall I had the wrong maxtransfer setting.
You can find the right setting at
http://www.gregdonner.org/os39faq/diskfileoperation.html
------------------------EDIT---------------------------
I just checked the drive. I used maxtransfer 0x0001fe00
and had no problems ever since formatting the drive.
-------------------------------------------------------
Good luck,
Lloyd

Still nothing :-(

Which max transfer setting did you use ?
Checked my disk again. Max transfer was set to 0x1fe00. Before I made the change my maxtranser size was 0xffff and formatting the drive would stop at a certain point.
---------edit-----------
BTW I got the solution from the amiga afs faq (google)
Do a goolge search for amiga afs faq in google groups.
check answers numbers 24 and 32.
quote from the faq:
24. What value should MaxTransfer be ?
IDE Drives - Try 0x1FE00. If files greater than 64K get corrupted then reduce it to 0xFE00.
SCSI Drives - Use 0xFFFE00.
It must also be divisable by the sector size (512) due to a bug in the WorkBench format code.
32. My machine hangs when I format my partition. Why ?
Your MaxTransfer value is too high. See the question on MaxTransfer...
-----------------------------------------------------------
-
I used the 0x1FE00 configuration
still nothing!!!
its crazy, i wont fight it, i will love it instead :-P :insane: :hat: :afro: :roflmao:
-
Well I guess you could try 0xFE00.
Maybe 0x1FE00 is still too high.
It is worth a try.
-
Also try the HD in a PC to see that it's properly unlocked.
-
Hey animagic, u got a towerhawk as a gift? I wonder where, I wonder where....
Glad to hear you are using it!
-
use SFS, FFS is rubbish compared to it anyway.
