Title: Would you rather post in forums, or as comments to news articles?
Post by: on March 24, 2005, 02:04:34 AM
Hi guys,

As some of you might remember, I'm working on a little pet project on the side, as sort of a "Coffee house on steroids".  I have run into a few snags though and would love to hear your opinions on the matter.

If you could only choose one, which type of Website would you prefer?

a) A forum-based Web site, (like spookychick.com) where everything takes place in the forums themselves.

b) A CMS/blog style Web site (like slashdot) where people could come, post stories to the absurd items (like they currently do here in the CH forums) and have other members be able to discuss those things as part of the comments.

There's not really a GOOD way to mix both, so rather than making a mistake up front, I'm asking for your considered guidance.

Wayne

I'll say that I'm posting in forums here simply because it's easier to quote in reply, the way things are rigged up.

If, like ANN, you can do a newsfeed that errs on the side of openness, but lets editors sweep "no-good" threads off the front page (I was discussing the concept of a "Trashcan" section for ANN a while back, where all the flamebait that would otherwise disappear could be hid and preserved), then you've got the best of most worlds.

The trick is in being able to preserve the information the editors would otherwise think is crap, while still conveying that they're very convinced it's crap and are only preserving it for completeness.  (This makes the service 'trustworthy,' because if a user happens to have a good idea in the middle of a flamewar, it'll still be there for him to recover or refer to by direct link... only problem is dealing with flood attacks, where you explicitly can't preserve the deluge, but Slashdot's timer theory is probably enough to help with that.)

Don't have an answer but admire the question.  :lol:

Hard to say.

@blobrana,

By "informal" do you mean anarchistic? I'm just not quite clear on what "informal" means..

@Wayne
Hum,
No I didn’t really mean that…….

Just a forum site that has the leeway to encompass totally stupid threads (I’m sure that most folks do appreciate them) i.e.  “It’s Friday”, “socks” etc rather that just `dry` news and weird stuff aka Slashdot or ann.lu

But hey,
might be easier to moderate in the long run....

@Wayne

I'd have to say forum. Then again, that might be just because I'm so used to this place.
