Title: The death of the dragon ;)
Post by: rayt on March 18, 2005, 11:07:01 AM
Hi

Don't know if it has already been mentioned on the forums but I noticed that the dragon banner on the a.org main page changed into an "elbox shop" banner.. Besides that the dragon completely disappereared from their page (excepting the old news messages).. most likely they never even had a working prototype.. but who cares really?

If it was entirely made up then I think it was a little silly of elbox, I mean it really hasn't done their credibility any good.

Yeah maybe they thought that some people will buy stuff to support them if they create the impression that they are still developing new amiga product.. but I don't know and I don't want to bash elbox here without a reason..
Imho the facts are: Mediator Boards are very good products and their support is also good, but they "wasted" a lot of credibility they got with the shark/dragon vapor issues..

Perhaps the problem is that their marketing guys simply announce anything that their engineers postulate might be possible.

Their website still has the Dragon listed under products and the banner at the top of their site alternates between the Dragon and the Shark.  I don't think they ever added it to the Elbox online store.

Still the lack of any new information is discouraging.  I e-mailed them a couple weeks ago and they said a small batch would be available by the 10th of March.  It is now the 18th and still not so much as a picture of the prototype or a news update to their website.

In their defense, there never even was anything on the website about the Dragon other than the press releases, so nothing's really 'disappeared.'

Still, though, we'll see what develops...

No. It hasn't.

If you do a search for "Dragon" in their online shop, you get the news message only, which tells you about their "aggressive pricing for PCI busboards". It contains a link to the news message of the Dragon only.

The vapourware SharkPPC(+) is still listed, anyhow, but the greatly announced eflash1200 (if you still remember) has disappeared like a cloud in the wind...

Strange thing... maybe it was an 1th of April joke which was released too early :-D

Maybe it's time for another riot (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13787)?

I meant that if you click on the Products link from the main page of their website (NOT their online store).  The Dragon is still listed in the "Product List" on the right.  The Dragon was never listed in their online store.

Maybe the dragon was just a way to sell more Mediators at a lower price to clear stock or something? Makes no sence tho...

Buh... wasn't the Dragon supposedly an accelerator/busboard all in one? How would that help mediator sales? They'd be in direct competition.

Well, in a free market, lowering prices on existing products is usually an indication of the imminent release of a newer product with similar functionality. However, as I'm learning, the Polish market is a little weird, at least from my perspective. Maybe they just over-produced the Mediator, and realizing how yet another questionable product announcement could hurt them financially, they decided to lower prices to increase sales.

(The most likely explanation has already been stated--that they lowered prices on their existing products to increase revenue and raise captial to develop the Dragon, which probably only exists as a design or perhaps a very rough prototype.)
