Title: Atari ST-Emualtion
Post by: McTrinsic on March 17, 2005, 11:33:10 AM
Hi all,

I got a question for you.

I am looking for an Atari-ST-emulator for an Amiga with ECS and 68030 <= 50 Mhz

I found an overview (well, sort of) here:

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/emulators-faq/part1/

However, I didnt find it really useful. Which of the emulators is actually useful? I am admittedly interested in playing these old games. I happen to have a "Medusa" 2.0 emulator here (A2000 Version). Anyone have some experience with it? The manual indicates that harddisk-use requires a special driver. Someoen know something about it?

Anyway - ideal would be an emulator to go with disk-images (just like UAE).

ST4Amiga looks interesting. Anyoe know this?

Have fun,
McTrinsic

I am very curious as to what game u specifically want to play?

I used Medusa, and another ST emulator back in 1989.

Sorry, can't tell you much about the names.

For once, I am interested in Ultima IV and The Bard's Tale, as well as The Rebel Universe (Star Trek game).

I played them with a friend back then. And, there were some "action"-games: shoot'em ups, and the like. I have to go through what I find in the sites preserving info on the games from back then.

I'd appreciate any help with the Medusa, anyway. Am I really able to use HDDs only with these special, few HDD-controlers named in the manual?

Have fun,
McTrinsic

ST4Amiga will not work on your configuration, like many old ST emulators for Amiga.

All these require a 68000, so you may need another type of emulator such as STonAmiga (http://ftp.unina.it/pub/aminet/misc/emu/STonAmiga.readme), which is OK for your CPU, but I think it requires a GFX card also.

@Cass

Thanks fo rthe answer...

But STonAmiga is too slow I heard. I don't have a GFX-Card.

I do have a "fallback"-switch to go from 68030 to 68000 (selectable at 7/14 MHz; memory 8Fast / 2 Chip)).

Would that be sufficient in speed to emulate the Atari?

Have fun,

Try Chameleon, it worked quite well with a 1.3 A500 :)

It seems that u like the same kinds of games that I like: games that have Magic, Monsters, SpellCasting, Fighting, strategy and that sort of thing. :-)

Therefore I recommend to u the following game
Total Chaos Monster Mashing Game! (http://totalchaos.web.pt/)

That game will run on ur real Amiga as long as u have 16 megs of ram or more.

It is much better than ANY Atari ST game ever and its much easier to get it working than any Atari ST emulator! :-D

It will give u something to do while u wait for an emulator solution.

  P.S. The Atari ST emulators I have used were so buggy that weren't really useful. :pissed:

Don't both of these HAVE Amiga versions?  :-)  I KNOW Bard's Tale does.  It's my favorite version.  It was coded quite a bit after the 8-bit versions...  Much nicer art and faster load times than the C64 edition I started with.

You know, I have both of those games and the Amiga versions are the best of any version that came out. You should look for them, 'cos I'm sure they're online.

@ChaosLord,

I need to get in touch with you, since you live in Houston. I could help you make better sprites for your game.  :-D

About 12 Amigans have contributed 1-3 "sprites" to the game.  Its a team effort.  I call them "anims" because they are not hardware sprites by the Amiga definition.

Remember that the game is running in 640x512 256 colors, so its only 4x the resolution of CivilizationAGA and ColonizationAGA, so it can be tough to make a better anim.  :-D

If u have a high quality, high contrast, Sniper Kitty gfx I would happily add that as a new creature to the game.

Or if u have a good Wayne or Urban Mueller gfx, I need to add them also.

Back on topic now  :lol:
I have played Bard's Tale and Ultima III and IV on Amiga back in the 80's.  But there is no Rebel Universe game for Amiga.  There is a similar game however called Star Trek 25th Anniversary for AGA Amigas.  I have it but I never played it.  :-(

@Crumb
Well, two things keep me from Chamaeleon:

1) I don't have access to the hardware.

2) Quoting from the Amiga Hardware database:
does not simulate the Atari hardware registers
programs hitting the hardware do not run
copy protected software and games generally do not work
a patch is supplied to run important software like Signum 2, TurboC 2.0 or Stad
hard disk support needs special drivers - hardfiles are not supported, the emulation requires dedicated Atari partitions
cannot read the special hyperformatted (>720 kB) floppy disks .

@ilwrath:
Yes both have an Amiga port.

But I am looking for something to quench my collector's thirst. And I am after the "original".

I like the Atari version of Ultima IV slightly better. And, there is no Rebel universe (as stated above) for the Amiga.

Finally, i am not going to spend really much time with the games. Just fiddling around. Meaning: no new games for me. Just dont have the time.

Though I would love to!

Have fun,
