Title: Need advise for A1200 clock port upgrage.
Post by: Redbaron1 on March 10, 2005, 08:05:58 PM
Hi all,

How do you upgrade half length clock port on Amiga 1200 motherboard?

I only have the left part on my motherboard, the right part is missing and I need it to connect the Subway USB adapter.

Thank you

Er... I think that's normal. What revision is your motherboard?

How many pins are present?

Nope, that`s not normal.. the rightmost 22 pins on P9B are the clockport.
There was a small batch of 1200`s made with the pins on the wrong side, usual CBM quality control :pissed:

Any decent electronics repair shop should be able to fix it

Doobrey has it right, the 22 pin header should be on the right end of connector P9B as you are looking at the a1200 m/b with the external ports to the rear away from you (i.e. closest to the internal expansion edge connector).  I've never seen a m/b with the left 22 pins but an old Amiga Format issue I have says there were some early C= motherboards that have this problem; there are even some boards that apparently have pins on connector P9A (very early 1MB designated boards that shipped with 2MB chip ram but too late to change the pin connector). fyi, C= planned originally on shipping a 1MB A1200 and selling a 1MB chipram upgrade board that would slot onto P9A. Thank God the engineers won that cost-cutting battle!

Ok thank you for all the replies.

My motherboard revision is 1D and strangly enough, the left connector is marked P9B instead of P9A.

Here a picture of my clock port connector.

In the Subway USB user manual they say; "if only the left part of your clock port connector is equipped contact your dealer for an upgrade" :-)

The manual is correct, there should be 22 pins on the RIGHT hand side of the connector.

Yes, and you proved it! and thanks for all your answers. I will let you know if I can't find a DIL header as you specified in the email. I will order one from you and probably many many other things! :-D

The only worry I have is, will it be difficult to fix on the motherboard?

if your good with a soldering iron or know someone who is u can just desolder each pin one by one...after removing all the pins the plastic can be removed..

re-solder all the pins in the correct place then put the plastic back in place..

i did this to my a1200 as a extentsion to get PRELUDE sound card in above BVISION..( A1200 DESKTOP ONLY.... NOT FOR TOWER USERS )...

I did this on my A1200 a few years ago to get an early catweasel interface working. No luck :-(
Ended up buying an LS120 drive as well to give me access to Msdos 1.44Mb disks.
I wondered at the time if any additional components had been left off the motherboard during manufacture.
Has anybody actually added these and got it working ? :-?

Nope, there are no parts apart from the header itself.

Personally, I wouldn`t remove the old pins, just trim them down to avoid shorting on any clockport card, as it`s not worth the risk of lifting a solder pad.

BTW, if the original poster was having trouble getting a new header, RS components have them, just look for 2mm IDC headers.

Hi guys! I found the missing part at electronic store saturday and manage to fix it without too many problems.

Now I have my 1200 equipped with 4 USB ports! :-)

The Subway USB adapter is great! Almost every USB devices I tried like flash card reader, USB key, mouse, keyboard was working perfectly. Only my Wacom Graphire Tablet doesn't work :-( The tablet freeze only few seconds after you start using it. Too bad, I'd really like to use it with Brilliance and Photogenic.

The Poseidon USB stack that came with the adapter is a very nice piece of software. It's always impress me what Amiga programmers can do.

Thanks for the help!

Maybe you should get a stronger PSU for your Amiga.
The original PSU is only 3A if I remember it right and maybe the power wont be enough for your equipped Amiga and its USB devices.

No, the Wacom is on the known failed list:

Nope it`s marked correctly, the entire connector is P9B.. P9A is the one above the chip mem.
