Title: A500
Post by: ramon on March 08, 2005, 02:54:42 PM
Hi,

I had a C-64 and I always wanted to have an Amiga. Now I've bought a used A500 just for fun.
It has 512+512Mb of ram and nothing else.

My plan is to be able to use this machine to connect to the web.

Sould I go to another model (i.e. a 1200)?

Thanks for this great site.

Ramon.

In theory you could connect to the web with an A500 but it would be a painful experience. You'd need some fast ram and an accelerator. Then you'd need to see about getting O.S 3.0 or higher. Oh and a hard drive is a must. I think an A1200 would be a better prospect all round, what with the extra display modes and faster processor.

Forget about the a500 for internet use unless you buy the following: 3.1 rom, 68020 or better accelerator with fast ram, hard-drive controller (sidecar) and extra 24-bit memory.  Even then you could still use a fat agnus upgrade, particularly a 2mb megachip board and forget about a graphics card.

If you can find a Viper 520CD (or even better the extremely rare Viper 530) and a 2Mb megachip board, then it's fairly easy to get an A500 on the internet. (I'm using an A500 to type this)

Unfortunately these things are rare and expensive and you only get a maximum of 16 colours to view web pages. Other expansions are also limited.

I'd say you should get an already upgraded A1200 and save the expense and pain.
