Title: some question about the amiga 4000
Post by: pablotinch on March 05, 2005, 02:51:05 AM
i just got an amiga 4000 from
i am just waiting for ups to put it in mine door .
so i have some questions ?
what kind of pc monitor will support the Amiga 4000 ?
also does the a570 will work in the Amiga 4000 ?
the 4000 does not came with floppy disk , so i know that the
floppy of the 4000 is different to the rest of the Amiga , so a normal pc floppy will work ??http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5169698384&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT (http://ebay)

Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but..........

Depends what you mean by "support."  The Amiga 4000 is capable of generating a 30khz video signal, which will be within the range of most standard VGA monitors.  But this video mode is only available through software configuration of the A4000.  So it only works in Workbench and things that are able to be mode promoted.  Most games can't run in this mode.  To be truely supported, you'll need either a scandoubler or a multi-sync (15 & 30khz capable) monitor.  Both are rare and rather expensive, nowadays.

No.  Not in any logical way, at least.  You may be able to disassemble the unit and use some parts of it, but I probably wouldn't recommend trying it.

No.  You need an A4000 floppy drive.  Or some combination of rare and expensive adaptors.

The A520 should work with A4000, but don't it have an videocomposite out just like the A1200? That would be a better solution in that case.

Even better would be to go for an RGB-SCART cable as it provides a better picture than the A520.

The 4000 does not have a composite out or any out other than a RGB port.  Yes the A520 will work with ALL Amigas!  You will also need a special floppy drive for the Amiga.  You can get some older chinon PC drives that will work with the Amiga and they are actually drop in replacements.  I have two stock 4000's and they both had Chinon drives.  I found some Chinon FZ-357 from a PC Salvage yard and they can be easily modded to work on the Amiga.  Do a search on here for Chinon FZ-357.

Good luck with your A4000, it is a very nice machine.  Just  make sure to check the battery and remove it if it is furry! ;)

The 23-pin video output is all that the A4000 has.  Yes, the A520 works with an A4000.  I used it on mine a few times to get a poor man's NTSC preview output.  ;-)

While you're technically correct, SCART is not terribly helpful for North American residents.  There are practically no devices which accept SCART as input.  Everything here is either RF (Channel 3/4), Composite, SVideo (SVHS), or Component Video (Y-Cr-Cb).

Very good advice.  If the battery is showing any signs of age, at all, remove it.  Even a small amount of corrosion can kill some traces, if you're unlucky.  Why take a risk?

I am a bit disappointed about the answers for floppy problems on the A4000. In my case I wanted to create extra room in my A4000D and I simply removed the floppy and moved the jumper close to the IDE port to set DF0 to external. Now I can use any external drive and it will be recognized as DF0 because the A4000 doesn´t search for an internal floppy anymore.  :-o It´s so easy !!

@Effy

Brilliant!  Thank You for the tip :-).

Well, yes.... But using "any Amiga drive" is still a far cry from using a PC drive, as the original post asked.

He has no drive.  If he's going to have to buy an Amiga drive, anyhow.... Why not just buy the proper drive to begin with?
