Title: A new 4000 Desktop Power supply
Post by: Ronmor on February 28, 2005, 09:18:30 PM
Hi all
I'm toying with an idea for a new power supply that can be used in the A4000 desktop. This power supply will be a bolt in so no cutting or hacking is required. Also the power supply will be around 250 watts and will be a smaller profile then the original, so a cd drive will fit in the slot above the floppy.
Any interest?

Any 17 cm (6,7 inches) deep drive will fit in that slot without problems. Lite-on, Plextor and HP are some of the manufacturers I know of that have optical drives that deep. But if it's extra power you need, go right ahead.

Ditto.

@Ronmor:

Also, make sure you also design it better than the original powersupply from an air-circulation perspective. This (http://www.amiga.org/gallery/index.php?n=594) image might give you some ideas ;=).

Hi Patrik
  Thanks for the air-circulation comment. The fan will be on the top of the power supply(about a inch or 25mm from top of case) where the heat is. The original removed air from bottom to middle of A4000 case and most of the time was blocked by ribbon cables.
  I want to hear all suggestion, comments and concerns I'm still in the planning stage.

@Ronmor:

When you put the fan on the top of the powersupply, make sure it still is possible to screw the harddrive to it as the rather wobbly A4000D case gets much more rigid with the harddrive mounted there.

Yah... the HD mounting need to stay.

I was thinking about something simular to the original PCU case though a bit shorter and the corner "cut off" to allow a fan (lownoise of cause) to draw the air at an angle into the PCU and then out the back (need to add better vent out back but keeping the overall feel and design). And with the powerplugs coming out of 2 places (2 Hd&2floppy to the front and 4 Hd and motherboard to the side). Toying with the idea of allowing space underneath the PSU for the ribboncables for the floppydrive (IDE ribboncable usually goes nicely over the top of the original PSU and thus not blocking the circulasion). It should be in the 300W range and with 2 power passthough to power either 2 monitors in a 2 monitor system or monitor and speakers.

Now make me one and I give you a beer. :-D

Hmm... Count me in as a person who would be interested in such an item.  My trusty old A4000 desktop power supply finally kicked the bucket.  I have an identical one to replace it, but a little bit beefier model that holds the key structural and visual components of the case together, along with supplying a little more juice would be helpful.

Thanks Again patrik, yes I'll half to fabricate a mount for the drives.

Hi Brian,
  Yes it will be shorter then the original PSU. The 300 watt electrical board is wider then the 5 inch or 128mm original so I'll half to stick with the 250 watt PSU.
