Not even an ordinary webpage update can they do in a normal time frame. It has been 17 days now since this message appeared on their homepage...
(11-Feb-2005) Stay tuned for the new Amiga site, coming soon
is'nt it fantastic!!! :)
-
Sigh....
When its done! (tm)
:lol:
-
When it's done, that was a god one...
:lol: :lol: :lol:
-
It will be updated as soon as they can afford to pay three or four years' salaries to the web-developer! :-D
-
There have actually been changes almost every day now, although I suspect that a lot of them are behind-the-scenes things, or possibly deletions; there's been no obvious visual changes that I can see, anyway.
(I'm tracking the site using Watch That Page (http://www.watchthatpage.com/index.jsp)... )
-
I realize of course that nowadays there's a tendency to kvetch about everything, but from what I understand, amiga.com is undergoing a complete rewrite, not simply an "ordinary webpage update".
This is potentially a good thing, so just let it be. It's not as though amiga.com has been actually useful or used for anything in the last two years anyway, so why {bleep} about it?

Who is?
Any update from a.inc is a great thing, all adds to positivity around here. I dont see anyone {bleep}ing about it (yet).
Give em time! Its not like they are Microsoft or anything.

Even with smiley's added, there's a barb of truth in every jest. Each of the comments made could easily be interpreted (despite the smiley's) as kvetching about the situation.
My only real point is that it doesn't really matter if the site's not there right now, because it's been completely unused and virtually unchanged for years. My only hope (with no offense intended to Ray) is that whatever is coming is a hell of a lot better designed and laid out than it was before.
I realize that Ray wasn't responsible for the original layout (that was Ted Wallingford before him), but having 4 or 5 completely different looking pages for 4 or 5 products and projects (whether they existed or not) was confusing and looked very, very amateurish. Add in the fact that NONE of the pages were integrated and it was a nightmare but that's just my opinion.
That being said, before (when it was stagnant) people kvetched because it wasn't being updated. Now it seems that people are throwing verbal punches because it is. Make up your minds please?
:-)

So please dont slate me for it, etc
@kev,
I never really understood that phrase. "slate you for it" sounds like you expect to be hit upside the head with a big slab of rock :)
@everyone else,
I have given up on trying to make people understand my personal stance that I don't care which company is involved any more. Once I gave up and accepted the fact that I had been screwed over, I simply gave up caring any more. Both companies involved have serious shortcomings and neither has EARNED my support and NEITHER has my allegiance.
My sensitivity as of late is that I'm just sick of hearing people {bleep}ing about ANY progress by ANY of the companies or people involved. While I'm certainly not innocent here, there's a growing contingency of "kids" here who're so entrenched into their viewpoints that don't even realize they go on the warpath whenever anyone from the "other side" reports any progress.
After 10 years of running Amiga.org (April 26th, 1995 was when we opened Amiga.org), all the kvetching and whining really, really gets on my fricking nerves, and I've just reached a point in my life where, if all someone is going to do is {bleep} and whine, I really don't want them around here mucking up the rest of the site for everyone else.
That's not censorship, that's not "being hitler", that's simply a mandate that if you don't actually enjoy your chosen obsession any more, then move on and let everyone else (who does) enjoy it without the negative input.
{edit:}
I am *not* trying to suggest that you shouldn't point out the obvious where EITHER Amiga Inc or Genesi is concerned. They've both dug their own respective holes with the community and the problems and history of each ARE fair game. It's simply irritating to hear someone report PROGRESS only to have everyone start slamming them for the exact same {bleep} they've been slamming them on for the past three years.
Amiga Inc "stole" your $50. Yeah, yeah, we got it. We've heard it for the past 3 years. At least you some of you finally got T-shirts. Genesi delivered a motherboard but abandoned your OS and screwed over several developers. Check. We got it. We've all heard it before. Yawn
The point is, if we (as a purported "community") aren't willing to "get over it" and move on, NEITHER company will ever be able to get anything done and all of this stupid posturing and guerilla marketing by certain individuals in the community is pretty much moot.

have you ever made or redone a web site????
Well, I have created - from scratch - several web sites and in one case tried to rebuild one that already existed.
I can tell you it's harder to to rebuild. and that's because you have to first figure out what the heck is going on - and that takes time - and then you have to remove things carefully so as not to break too many links at once.
you have to figure out what your new layout is going to be and where certain things (that may not exist yet) can be placed.
you have to take down bricks and in some cases weight baring walls without having the entire building falling down on your head. if you think this is a process that's easy or done quickly, go ahead and try it.
how about letting the guy doing this just be allowed some peace and quiet. obviously, the person rebuilding the site is NOT the "head" of the company. he's just doing a job on the site. he may be doing other jobs as well. who knows? you don't know.
why rip into him? are you paying his salery? do you know the schedule for this job?
i'll bet not.
all i'm saying is that maybe it's time some people enter the real world and stop whining like little babies.
what the "amiga comunity" needs is for all of us to do what WE can to make things good - and enjoyable. look not to some company or a company web site - but to YOURSELF.
to pharaphrase JFK:
"Ask not what your company can do for you...ask what can YOU do for your community!"
-
@Wayne:
While I fully understand your opinion in this, and agree wholeheartedly with your conclusions, the fact that you have written this same story at least half a dozen times already tells me that at some level you do care---otherwise you wouldn't be spending so much time and effort voicing your opinion. Just to be absolutely clear on this: I really don't care what your opinion is (although I happen to agree with it), I am solely concerned with the fact that you too keep on saying the same things more often than one would expect from someone who is 'beyond caring'.
This is not meant as a 'grating' message as you so pointedly call those, merely one to try and make you think about your own motives.
-
@cymric,
I do care. I have always cared about the Amiga community, but I don't care about the things for which I am constantly accused. If either Amiga Inc or Genesi officially fell off the face of the Earth tomorrow, it would not (and should not) affect me (or most of you) one single iota. I do *care* however about the constant annoying buzzing around the same old "dead horse" subjects.
Everyone (including me) has become so generically negative that even progress -- in this case, the building of a new Amiga.com -- is pedantically picked apart like it's a bad thing. While I understand the frustration surrounding both Amiga Inc and Genesi, this continual whining about the same old subjects is about two years past "getting old" to me. Invariably no matter what the subject or good news, everyone simply circles around to start whining about the same damned subjects.
My only point, and it bears repeating, is that we MUST either "get over it" or "get away from it". Right now, the community and the fanaticism of A FEW of it's members is the biggest enemy the Amiga platform has towards any future success.

I was in a meeting in work the other day, with the new boss here... and he said something along the lines of :-
Either lead, follow, or get out of the way.
I think that sums Amiga.org up and the rest of the community.
Pick one, and stick to it. Me? I choose fo follow, cos im not a leader in any sense or form :-D
-
@cymric,
I must say that I love your signature as well.
Wayne
-
Linch,
Thanks. "Lead, follow, or get out of the way" sums up life but it helps illustrate part of my frustration. You can't lead if all you do is kvetch about things that no longer matter in the real world.
Wayne
-
True.
But, why do you then?
Dont get me wrong, I think you and the staff here at a.o do a great job in this jungle that is Amiga, and computers in general. Do people see Amiga as real life, or simply something "that was" and "could be"?
I know amiga.org is one of the very few site(s) i visit about, maybe 25 times per day to check on things .. infact i'd say its one of the only site's i bother with nowadays.
To sorta sum it up, and site with the word Amiga in / on it is great in my book's. It's what makes a community, more than 1 person / object / whatever.
As long as there is a light at the end of the tunnel, the people here will hold on. Sure a few will fall before the end of the ride, but most people here "know the score" about how long website's take to make etc. Wayne, you of all people know what effort is needed to run a site, etc and that there is no way anyone can please everyone.
Time to do some more waiting i guess. If you dont want to wait, there is always http://www.microsoft.com which i guess gets updated daily :-D

Or http://distrowatch.com/ (http://distrowatch.com/) which gets updated even more frequently with better stuff!! ;-)

You won't have any choice in the matter soon, unless you want to never update your windows again.

@cecilia
Well, said. Put's it nicely into perspective.
@Wayne
Perhaps the same old story is because, realistically, it may be all we have left.
Yes, OS4 and MOS are here, OCS/ECS/AGA still work.. But after al these years, I really can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Still, I can't imagine Hyperion are only doing OS4 just for the fun of it. Erm, what fun anyway ?

Don't infer that you even an inkling of a clue about the state of my finances. As I have said many times before in various forums, that's my business not yours. :-x
As for the website, it will take some time. It seems Amiga Inc. can't please everyone. Half will whine because things are being done, the other half will whine because of the appearance that nothing is being done.
Whether you like it or not, what was posted on Amiga Inc ("New site coming soon") is a certainty. It will take as long as it takes for that work to be done. Not years, not months. But certainly more than "17 days."
It might be roaringly funny for people to say "when its done," and ROTFL like it was the funniest thing since Monty Python's The Life of Brian but that's about all I'm going to say right now. Yes, we have timelines and yes, we know what they are. However, those will not be revealed. Why? Because if there is some reason for a delay, whether it be programming related or otherwise, someone will find a reason to moan about it.
So, for those with their chuckle bags on, the site is "coming soon" and soon will be "when it's done."
Ciao,
-
@HMetal,
Haven't seen you posting in some time.
It seems Amiga Inc. can't please everyone.
Personally, I think Amiga Inc. shouldn't have said anything about the site being updated, well, not by a news item anyway.
IIRC correctly, you and Gary said the you (Amiga) are busy building a new site. No time frame was given.
But like you said, If Amiga speaks people complain or joke. If Amiga remains silence, people complain and begin rumoring..
Hm... I don't suppose I can persuade you give us a behind the scene looksee ? :-D
-

Literally speaking, that gives you seven weeks max from the day you posted the announcement, as eight weeks is two months and you said "not months". :-P
j/k Good luck to hit yeour proper deadline. :-D
-
Okay, I think the joke has worn out....
-
The amiga anywhere shop has not reopened yet either.. It was supposed to be closed until january 2005.

Why not just work on the new site in the background while leaving the current site up? Then when the new site is ready put it online. Surprise us. Sort of like the t-shirts. Yeah, it was announce that they would be sent, but I don't think anyone really expected them to. Then , Boom! people started getting t-shirts, without some grand announcement that they were actually shipping.

I even slept in mine, woohoo :banana:

I have to agree totally with you there.. But i guess it is sadly too late now though.. :)

I was thinking it would be nice to have Hyperion snag amigaos.com from the domain shark that currently owns it. And then I decided to do a trademark search. It's probably been posted before, but anyhow . . . head over to http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=login&p_lang=english&p_d=trmk (http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=login&p_lang=english&p_d=trmk) and search for serial number 74331914. Be sure to read the goods and services field.

Interesting, Mr Buck owned the trademark "Amiga" until 18th April 2004!
