Title: Cyberstorm PPC 233 Bug?
Post by: Robert17 on February 27, 2005, 10:42:35 PM
As mentioned above I've heard of a bug with a software fix, does the bug only apply to PPC use, or everything, and how effective is it?

It's some sort of a strange bug that only occurs at 233Mhz speed, even if your CPU is overclocked to 233Mhz (e.g a real 200Mhz 604e). The latest WarpUP v5.1 carries a built-in solution for it, so as long as you run this version of WarpUP, you should be fine. That's all I know. For more details, I hope that someone else can advise. :-)

This problem is as far as I see it caused by that the 233 mhz version has a 10° C lower alowed operational temp (just check Motorolas specs..) than the 200 mhz and lower ones..

And good old P5 used the same heatsink and fan on them all.. I have even seen som DCE ones using an even smaller fan...

Using this patch just hides an overheating problem! And overheating of the PPC doesn`t prolong its liftime, but kills it slowly instead!
This "patch" is built into and enabled in OS3.9 WarpOS as a standard feature. One actually have to disable it with setting ENVARC:PowerPC/No233Fix to 1

Better cure this problem with improved cooling of the PPC than to hide the problem with this patch!

I have 2 CSPPC's here, one 060/50 and one 060/60 but both 233 mhz 604's. One of them running for years 24/7. Btw. Both Phase 5...
