What about nuns? I mean at least they have a concious choice...

No, I mean if you were sitting in the middle of the antarctic with no clothes, would you rather be painted white or black...?

Hum,
Any knowledgeable restaurant waiter will tell you that it’s about camouflaging themselves against sea predators.

I believe that the White on their bellies is for camouflage... that doesn't explain why the rest of them is black...

hum,
from above they are hidden while swimming.
But it could be that it’s a flocking/social marker.
it is interesting to note that most seabirds are white, probably due to a visual indication to show the rest of the flock where the fish are...

Well, I guess, since black absorbes more light, the fur will become more warm. Predators, of course, will have a disadvantage of a black fur (easier to be spotted) so, they're white and have a fur wich is more thick.
Or am I responding to a question wich is a bit :crazy:?

@eyso
Going to the other pole, you know polar bears are dark? Their skin anyway. Their fur is not actually white, but translucent, which assists in getting transmitted sunlight to the skin where it provides some degree of warming.

actually - I DID know that, Mr smarty-pants! :lol:

So polarbears lose a lot of heat at night :-?.

Nope. The fur conducts visible light to the skin where it is warmed, but the insulating effects of the fur and the fact that it is effectively 'white' make it a poor re-radiator of the accumulated heat.
