Hey Yo!
Yeah, i missed you too. I hope you wont mind me taking a little.... SURVEY!!! In public, if you will. I was wondering what people thought the best "failed" computer or console was?
My personal favourite would the Neo Geo AES. Such a fantastic arcade perfect experience in your home. The Neo Geo AES was never going to be commercially popular due to the high priceof not only the system itelf (costing $600), but the games as well (costing $200 each). but thanks a great library of great games, the Neo Geo developed a cult following and outlasted it's 16-Bit rivals (SNES and Genesis) to continue up until the last year.
What is your favourite "failed" computer or console
Regards,
-
I guess I may not choose an Amiga, right?
-
I'd probably have to go with the Amiga.
-
The Amiga was commercially sucessful (especially in the UK). So that would not be an option. Nice try fellas :-)
Regards,
-EDIT-
By failed consoles i mean:
Panasonic 3DO
Philips CDi
Sharp X68000
Sinclair Quantum Leap
Atari 5200
Atari Lynx
Sega Nomad
GP32
Sam Coupé
....etc - The list goes on!!!
Regards,
-
Well, the CDTV wasn't particular succesfull
guess I'll pick that one :-P
but next to that one my fav is I think the CDi, or Atari Jaguar
btw the lynx was quite succesfull wasn't it :-?

yeah, but they all failed because they were crap... the winners won, because they were good. :-P

OH! Very controversial remark there Mr. Bloodhound. That is not always the case. The GP32 is a very good console, but commercially will never be a success due to financial difficulties with the Gamepark (the company). "Underground" wise, the GP32 is a complete success.

It had a few games, but was not a success due to low battery life. It is a damn fine machine though, i have one!
-
I got one too, plus a few other computers/consoles :-D
but still, despite the known low battery life, I still recall it as being a bit successfull, not quite as the gameboy, but certainly not a failure either...

I think it was. It lasted longer than i thought it did (1989-994). But it was a failure really because only a handful of games came out. Although, games are still being made for it today (Apline Games).
Regards,
-
What about systems like TurboGrafx and TurboDuo? Those were huge successes in Japan, however failed in N. America. :-?
-
How do you judge failure? The Amiga was no failure...
My own vote goes to the 3DO.
-
Hrm,
Console wise I'd go with the 3do, which had some superb games but the price (initially) for the console was obscene.
Computer wise...
BeBox or CDTV (yes Amigas were a commercial success but the CDTV wasn't).
-
I had some good fun wiv my Dreamcast. People call that a failure - the build quality wasn't so good but the games were esp. Shenmue...
-

The build quality was excellent, I mean, it's very much PS2 quality
And I can say that because I have one (a DC, and a friend of mine has a ps2) :-D
Heck, I think most of the GameCube games can be ported to a DC with a minimum of quality loss
-
Mine would have to be the "Neo Geo Pocket Color".
These little babies were fantastic, and still are.
-
Hey Yo!
I maybe getting a 3DO, it looks a good solid system.
Regards,
-
Hmm would have to say Turbo Duo. Not only does it play games very nicely still after 12 years, the build quality is amazing! Very solid plastic, rugged CD-ROM mechanism, reads burned CDs, and has a homebrew following/demo scene. Also if you happen to have the pleasure of owning one, hook it up to your stereo. You will be amazed at the clarity and crispness of the CD audio playback.
Runners up:
Sega Dreamcast (Moderate success)
Sega Saturn (Doomed because of the SegaCD and 32x fiasco)
-
Virtual Boy is kind of cool, however it's definitely not for everyone.

Virtual boy is kinda cool, but you could only play it for about 20 minutes before you got a headache and your eyes started to bleed.
-
Anyone got a GP32 BLU?
I'm thinking of getting one, because of all the different emulators you can get for it, even the Playstation! :-o
I haven't seen any evidence of a UAE port to it yet though.

I had one too and so did a few friends, the controllers in particluar were poor and reminded me of N64 controllers, very plasticy (PS2 has best controller of any console IMO).
Additionally those VMU's went wrong / fell out after a few months - No-one I knew had one that lasted a year...
-
well, got hardly a problem with those controllers, I can play quake 3 with it quite nicely already (I don't give a damn about the thingy being plastic or not, it seems to me solid enough).
So I think that's a matter of opinion.
But considering the fitting the vmu, I just got one, so, good you tell me this now :-/
(though I'm very carefull with it, unlike other ppl I see often)
-
Hey yo!
The Dreamcast version of Quake 3 kicked butt most definately! :-) The VMU is okay, although the top of it becomes loose after a while.
Regards,
-
The Dreamcast controllers are way too small and cramped...not everyone has hands the size of a small child.
-

Hey yo!
I dunno Mr odin, i have big hands (hell that is why i am goal keeper!), and my hands were okay with the pad.
Regards,
-
I always get cramped hands after only 15 mins of play with the DC controllers I have. Perhaps I should look at some thirdparty controllers or something. Then again I don't really like joypads in general. I'd rather have a decent joystick :-).

I've got shovel hands too, and I find the Gamecue to have the most comfortable to hold controller. PSX controllers are awful for me to hold.
-
@mdma
Some of our politics aside. We got a lot in common. I can't stand the PS2 controllers now. When I first got my gamecube I resented being forced to use an analog, but over time? Now PS2 won't do.
The Donkey Kongas are the ultimate in comfort. ;)
I'm only 31, but my hands will cramp on anything if I try to pull one of my old 12 hour video games sprees from my high school days. Getting old sucks

The Atari 5200 wasn't a failure. At the time (early 80's) it was -the- console to get. It only died because Warner Communication (now Time-Warner) decided to get out of home electronics.
....etc - The list goes on!!!
to the Atari 7800 and Jaguar, the Sega FX-32 (I dunno, that wasn't really a console, was it?) and Saturn, and let's not forget Nuon-based DVD players.
Being the owner of 3 Jags, I think I'd have to vote for the Dreamcast (I've never owned one). It was the console with the most fans and the fewest games.
I'd vote for the Jag, but it wasn't successful enough to be a failure. :-D
-
Getting old sucks
You can say that again! :-D
-
After playing a couple of hours quake 3 with the dc controller I got indeed a bit of cramp in my hands.
Considering the vmu? Well, there's always cello/duct tape! :-D
-

Failed ? I thought the "Turbo" consoles were just never marketed outside of Japan ? They seemed rather popular with imports
-
I remember the TurboGrafx 16 being sold in WalMart at about the time the SuperNES came out. It was a bit weak with only an 8-bit processor when compared with the 65816 of the SNES and the 68000 of the Sega Genesis.

What is a VMU?

Something a pot of live yoghurt and a week long course of antibiotics gets rid of usually! ;-)

Hey Yo!
The FLU stands for "Front Lit Unit" (which has a front light on the screen similar to GBA SP) and BLU stands for "Back Lit Unit" (which is similar to the back lit handhelds like Game Gear Atari Lynx). I hope this helps
Regards,
-
considering the multimedia abilities of the GP32 I'm quite sceptical.
Unless an usb stick can be used on the usb port (or an external cd-r/dvd combo),
'cuz these smart media cards seem not to be that common nowadays and 128 mb seems to be the maximum
also a pity there's no touch screen, if there was, you really could replace yer palmtop with it
maybe time for a gp128? :-)

@Speel
Did you have any trouble with the connector for the power supply on the Atari Lynx. My old one came loose and broke. And my newer one is coming a little loose, but am having it repaired and made more stable.
Regards,
-
never had any troubles with that :-?
(btw, I got a lynx 2)

I never had trouble with my Lynx. It was built like a Volvo! :-D

Would now be a good time to get back to you about the PM i sent you referring to Sumner7's tribute song?
Regards,

Oh yeah, that... Uhhh.
I think that'd be best left to someone who really knows him.
-
I think we have seen the best of Sumner7 on these forums :-)
