Title: Prometheus guru assistance needed
Post by: Plaz on February 22, 2005, 03:16:42 AM
I'm in need of assistance getting my new prometheus to install properly.
I have an A4000/040 with 3.1OS, I've installed the prometheus software,
the prometheus 2.5 update and picasso96. I'm using an S3Virge video card.
When I run findcard util, it finds and identifies my Virge card and the
RTL8139 ethernet card I have installed. My first biggest problem is
Picasso96mode does not see the prometheus card when I try "Attach setting to"
I've been to the home page of picasso96 for troubleshooting tips and followed
their examples. First I've used the automatic scripts for picasso96 and
prometheus, then went back manually checking files, paths settings and libs.
I'm kind of stuck now looking for the next step. Following the troubleshooting
tips I've captured the output from snoopdos for clues to the problem.
I can see the drivers and libs were succesful, but several of the card options
have failed. I wouldn't beleive those would crash me, but then that's why
I'm looking for help. I'm eager to work with openpci also, but I need to
get past the basic install first. Thanks for any help and here is the
snoopdos output.

Have you tried to disable the tooltypes in the icons information of any of the items that fail in the output from snoopdos ?.

Left click the icon to select it, Then right click and hold and go to the icon menu and select infomation.

I could be completely wrong as this may have nothing to do with it what so ever. But it could be worth a try, Judging by the out put from snoopdos.

What is the exact answer - is it "no board" ?

@Trooper

I thought about it, but haven't tried it yet.
I was waiting to see what info I get before I start
making more changes. If all else fails I'll be disabling tool types.

@zipper

Correct, the only choice is "no board"

@Plaz

What type of Virge card is it?

Check if you have all the files needed and available here:

@red

S3VirgeDX, but I can't see the prometheus card in picasso96mode. Odd thing is I could see it originally before the 3.1 install, so I'm betting I have a missing file or bad config some where now.

I have the same problem as you, but I have an EC030 processor, so I was thinking maybe it's the lack of MMU, and the same setup worked when I had a Cyberstorm 060.

@Robert17

Thanks for that clue. Maybe I need to be taking a close look at the 68xxx.library and other lib files. Maybe I need a different version than the one included with the stock 3.1

@Plaz

I doubt it has to do with the CPU. Something in the install is botched:-/ Are you sure there is the virge.chip in libs/prometheus?

The latest S3Virge.chip on Matay site is  v7.516 (19.03.03.) Is that the same as delivered with Prometheus?

Any one have any experience with openpci?
At this point I think I'd like to just reformat
the drive and start over. But I would like to
back up my data first, and 50-100 floppies
would be horrid. I have a RTL8139 nic but it
would require openpci. I think Red still has
some 8029 nics for sale, but I don't want to buy
a palet of 40 :-) So if I can get prometheus to
talk to my nic and miami/tcp, I can back up to
another hd and system.

Yes, forget about it and stable RTL8139 support for now. The author just released new versions which improves stability which is promising, but AFAIK it's still not ready for prime time. I'd definately reccomend RTL8029AS as it's rock hard stable under Miami.

Formatting the HD and starting over from scratch would probably be a good idea.

 :lol:
Actually I'm finished selling lots of 40+, i actually only have about ~30 individual cards left for sale.
HERE (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5750539210&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT). If you want one use checkout and pay standard shipping, I'll upgrade the shipping to Priority Mail so you get it quicker.

Well, while I wait on my 8029 nic to arrive, I continue to mess with the prometheus with some success. If I move the card to any slot other than the one next to the video slot, picasso96mode can't see it. If I move it next to the video slot, it appears in picasso96mode when I go to "attach to". But doing so has no effect. The "modes" section of picasso96mode all ways has all of the config setting greyed out and picasso96mode always tells me ALL of the possible video modes are unsupported and would I like to diable or delete the choices. I figure this has to be some thing to do with the way picasso recognises prometheus or the way I need to set up the files for my S3virge card. Exactly how do I use the .chip files? I can't find any documentation on these. And I still want to mess  with openpci if someone can help me figure out how to fire it up. I have all the files in place, now what? I know it's supposed to be buggy, but even if I get the amiga to crash while using it, that would be progress. Right now the ami almost acts as if the prometheus doesn't exsist. The prominfo util shows my pci cards so I know that's not entirely true.

Sigh.... Once again picasso96mode sees no board to attach to. I've enjoyed digging in to the guts my my old ami again, but I must say the lack of doc support on prometheus is bumming me out.

I have an EC030 too, and I had problems with my Prometheus until I turned off the CPU data cache. Of course, that won't do much for overall system performance, but you might want to try it.

@Plaz

You don't use .chip files. When you use the install script they go into a sub folder in libs ( libs/prometheus IIRC).

In CLI try:
version prometheus.library
version picasso96.library

They are located where they are supposed to be then.
And prometheus.library version = 2.5
I don't have a picasso96.library but I do have a
picasso96API.library = 2.3 Is that the one you mean?
I've had a bit more success by renaming the prometheus
monitor and libs:prometheus both respectivly to picasso96.
Then I'm able to start the monitor, run picasso96mode,
PVS and findcard with some results. (Faking out the picasso utils)
But still no display from the card. On I trudge.
I've tried digging up more docs one the
interworking on picasso96, but I guess I shouldn't be
suprised that little exsist besides the source code.
IF I ever get it all working, I promise to do a proper
document on installing an S3Virge with prometheus since
none seems to exsist so far.

@Trooper

Some how I missed my reply to your question....
Yes I did alter all tooltype settings so that I receive
all "OK" messages now when I run the monitor.
And it's probably contributed to the limited responses
I'm getting from the picasso utils now.

YEAH!

S3VirgeGx Video Card in the Prometheus!

(http://www.geocities.com/sandbags.geo/cargo/S3VirgePrometheus2.jpg)

Still lots of mode and settings to mess with and test,
but this really brightens my week. Docs to come later
when I'm done playing around and get it stable.

Well after testing a couple of other video modes, the amiga locked up. I rebooted and I'm back to where I started. No video. Hard to understand since it was working and I didn't make any config changes. I was only choosing a new mode and hitting "Test" in picasso96mode. I don't get any more errors but there ya go. I'm starting to beleive the S3Virge driver needs a re-write. Well back to the docs and testing. (Does anyone care any more ;)

@Plaz

Try a Voodoo3 card instead of the Virge; the graphics are better and it is stable.

I'm on the hunt for a voodoo card now. Red confirms that
there is a problem with the driver working on a virgeGX,
while it runs find with a virgeDX card.
I've taught myself a lot by working this dead end though,
and I may be the only person ever to get a GX to display at all. :-)
I was interested in working on pci drivers. Starting by
figuring out why a DX and GX are different should be
an easier place to start learning.
