Title: A1200 PPC / BVISION PPC questions (ask before buy)
Post by: keropi on February 18, 2005, 08:09:00 AM
I will be getting a ppc card for my miggy, a 603e/200 + 060/60 but I was wondering how sensitive they are... do they fail often? Should I keep my 1260 for backup? or sell it and buy more goodies for my miggy? what do u propose?
And what's the deal with the BVISION card? Can it be used to play in good speed the ppc versions of heretic/quake2/quake and all other software? or would it be better to get a g-rex + voodoo3 or similar card?
And most importantly: the only way to switch between the amiga/rtg display is by using a manual switch? Is there a way to make the switch automatically, like many zorro rtg do?  :-?
thanx for any info  :-D

I've got a BVision installed in my A1200 desktop and it works like a charm. No sudden crashes or anything (although I did add extra cooling fans inside) I can play WipeOut without any problems, so it doesn't fail. Although some people have had bad luck trying to fiddle the BVision inside the original case. (So I've been told) If you are interested in the 3D performance I wouldn't go for the BVision, if you just want to use your amiga for programming, use the BVision coz that should be more than enough, and personally I always prefer the original cased A1200 rather than the tower-version. (Same for the PPC-card)

Hi!

I suggest you dont' buy ppc and or bvision as you cannot play at reasonable speed games like heretic 2 shogo or freespace...

The only games that you can play are quake 1 and 2 and wipeout

Instead if you like to upgrade your miggy and you want a gfx card i suggest you to hold your 060 and take a mediator + voodoo 3 and you won't regret it !

The Mediator is a powerful expansion for the amiga !! if you put a soundblaster and a voodoo you'll notice the difference ! :-)

even if I get a mediator, how will the display switch? and I do not think a mediator fits on my tower...

Keropi

if you can deal with, buy without any esitation the BlizzardPPC.

About the GFX card, feel free to chose what you prefer even if, (if i were you) i would buy the BVision as perfect BlizzPPC companion.

The only suggestion is . . . pay MUCH attention to the seller ;-)

If you want to use TV out for games the mediator supports a whole heap of TV cards.  You can set the output to your workbench screen and play the games in a window.

If you get a voodoo card a standard P96 driver is used.

I think the mediator only fits in a few tower cases (not unless you want to do a bit of modification) such as the power  tower or elboxs own.  There's a few nicer looking towers on www.revanchellc.com (http://revanchellc.com/cgi-bin/mivavm?Merchant2/merchant.mvc+Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=REV&Category_Code=CLASC).

IMO I'd spend the extra and get a mediator (or wait until the coldfire is released ;) ).  It's a bit annoying to set up but it's worth it in the end.

@killer

playing heretic 2,shogo & freespace is fine..it all depends on the speed of the blizzppc..& screen mode..
